Chapter 4 - The Intern's True Colors

Two days after his termination, Cameron found out just how fragile his little world truly was.
He sat alone in the dim, messy living room of our marital home—a house that felt cavernous and suffocating now that I and our son were safely staying elsewhere. The moving boxes were piled high in the hallway. Half his clothes were already gone.
The front door chimed and swung open.
Sophie walked in.
She wasn't wearing her white intern coat. Instead, she wore a designer silk dress, a smug, triumphant smile plastered across her face. Gone was the tearful, trembling victim of Operating Room Four. In her place stood an ambitious, cold-hearted opportunist.
"Sophie," Cameron muttered, rubbing his temples, not even bothering to stand up. "What are you doing here? I told you not to come to the house."
Sophie laughed—a sharp, grating sound that made Cameron's stomach turn.
"Oh, come on, Cammy," she purred, dropping her designer handbag onto the kitchen island. "Don't be like that. We won! Well... you lost everything, but I survived."
Cameron slowly lifted his head, his bloodshot eyes narrowing. "What are you talking about?"
Sophie walked over, leaning against the back of the sofa, looking down at him with undisguised pity and contempt.
"The disciplinary committee called me in this morning," she said brightly. "I gave my statement. I told them that you—the brilliant, authoritative Chief of OB-GYN—forced the natural delivery against my repeated warnings. I told them you refused to listen to reason because you were stressed and erratic."
Cameron’s jaw dropped. He stood up so fast his chair tipped backward onto the hardwood floor with a crash.
"You... you threw me under the bus?!" he roared, his voice cracking with disbelief. "I protected you! I trusted you! I ruined my entire life, my marriage, my career, everything for you!"
Sophie rolled her eyes, crossing her arms over her chest.
"For me? Please, Cameron. You did it because your fragile ego couldn't stand the thought that your brilliant ER-doctor wife was right and you were wrong. I just played the game better than you did." She leaned in close, her voice dropping to a venomous whisper. "Do you really think a brilliant, rising star like me would hitch her wagon to a disgraced, blacklisted doctor whose license is about to be revoked? Wake up, old man."
Cameron stared at her, the final, horrifying puzzle pieces snapping violently into place.
The fake reports. The staged tears. The calculated manipulation.

He hadn't just lost his wife, his son, and his career to his own arrogance. He had handed the knife to a viper who had stabbed him in the back the moment he stopped being useful.
Cameron let out a hollow, hysterical laugh that quickly turned into a dry sob. He sank back down onto the arm of the sofa, covering his face as the crushing weight of his monumental stupidity finally broke him completely.
