Chapter 2 - Shadows in Greenwich

The digital clock on the nightstand read 3:14 AM. Outside, the wind howled through the manicured hedges of our Greenwich estate, lashing heavy rain against the floor-to-ceiling bedroom windows. But the storm outside was nothing compared to the storm brewing in my mind.

I paced the length of the master suite, my bare feet silent on the imported Persian rug. Every instinct as a CEO, as a man who had built a multi-million-dollar empire from scratch, screamed at me to analyze the risk, deploy resources, and neutralize the threat. But this wasn't a hostile corporate takeover. This was a war against a corrupt, entrenched judicial predator who operated above the law in the hills of West Virginia.

"We need to get security involved," I said, stopping abruptly to look at Emily. She had dressed in dark jeans and a heavy sweater, her tears dried, replaced by the hardened resolve of a survivor.

"Private security won't work, Nathan," she replied, her voice steady. "Judge Vance has local law enforcement in his pocket across three counties. If we call the police in West Virginia, the report goes straight to his desk before the officer hangs up the phone. He owns them."

"Then we take it federal," I countered, pulling my phone from the charger on the desk. "I have contacts at the Department of Justice in Washington. High-level connections. If we walk in there with a federal judge's financial records, signed murder confessions, and surveyor notes—"

"And how long will that take to process?" Emily interrupted, stepping close to me and placing a hand on my chest. Her touch grounded me instantly. "Months? A year? Every single day we wait is a day Johnny, Paul, and Lily remain hostages in that boarding school. Vance checks on them every Monday. If he doesn't receive my payment confirmation by noon tomorrow—or if he suspects I've told my new husband the truth—he'll move them. And once they're moved, we'll never find them again."

I stared down at her, realizing she was entirely right. Bureaucracy moves at a glacial pace, and our enemy moved like lightning.

"Tomorrow is Monday," I noted darkly.

"Yes," Emily whispered. "And I'm supposed to wire twenty thousand dollars to his off-shore account by ten o'clock, or his men will pay the school a visit."

"Twenty thousand dollars," I repeated, a cold smirk touching the corners of my mouth. "Is that all it takes to keep a federal tyrant at bay for another month?"

"It's extortion, Nathan. He bleeds me dry so I can never afford a lawyer, never leave my job, and never fight back."

"Well, Mrs. Brooks," I said, pulling her into my arms and kissing the top of her head, "your financial situation has drastically improved as of tonight. You married a billionaire, remember? Let's give Judge Vance his blood money. But this time, we're attaching a tracking device to the wire."

Emily pulled back, her eyes widening in shock. "You want to pay him?"

"I want to feed him enough rope to hang himself," I said, my CEO coldness fully awakening. "We wire the money exactly as he demands, so he feels secure. But my chief of cyber security, Marcus Vance—no relation to your tormentor—can route the transaction through a smart-contract tracer that will map out every single shell company, offshore account, and physical IP address connected to his syndicate within seconds."

"And the children?" Emily asked, her breath catching in her throat. "What about Johnny, Paul, and Lily?"

"We don't wait for the feds," I said, my voice dropping an octave. "While Marcus tracks the money, my private security detail—former Tier One operators currently on retainer—will board my Gulfstream G650 at Westchester County Airport. By noon tomorrow, they'll be on the ground in West Virginia. We're going to extract your family ourselves."

For the first time since our wedding ceremony began, a genuine smile broke through Emily's exhaustion. But before she could answer, a sharp, piercing sound shattered the quiet of the night.

Beep. Beep. Beep.

It wasn't a phone. It was the master control panel for the estate's perimeter security system mounted near the hallway door. A amber light was blinking furiously, accompanied by a chilling automated voice from the intercom:

Perimeter breach detected. Sector Four: West Gate.

Emily froze, color draining entirely from her face. "He's already here."
