Chapter 2 - THE ARREST AND THE REVELATIONEthan stood in the doorway, soaked in rain, his hair plastered to his forehead. His face was twisted in a blend of rage and fake panic. Behind him stood Evelyn, wearing her expensive cashmere sweater, looking impeccably groomed despite the late hour.

“Elena!” Ethan shouted, taking a aggressive step into the room. “What the hell is this?! Mrs. Greene called the cops on my family? Are you insane? Do you have any idea how embarrassing this is for us?!”
Evelyn rushed in behind him, her voice dripping with artificial sweet poison. “Darling, please! You fell because you were drunk and clumsy! We were trying to help you! Tell these officers to leave so we can take you home where you belong!”
I didn’t flinch. For months, their elevated voices had made me shrink into myself. But looking at them now—knowing they were trying to poison me, knowing their chat log was sitting in a police folder—the fear inside me evaporated, replaced by a cold, searing fire.
“Don’t step any closer, Ethan,” I said, my voice dead pan, clear, and ringing across the quiet room.
Ethan scoffed, marching toward my bed. “Don’t you dare speak to me in that tone! I am your husband! You will get out of this bed right now and—”
CLICK.
Ethan froze instantly.
Detective Vance stepped out from behind the privacy curtain, his hand resting firmly on his sidearm, while two uniformed officers stepped in from the hallway, blocking the door.
“Ethan Vance—no relation,” Detective Vance said dryly. “Put your hands behind your back.”
Ethan’s face went pale. “What? On what grounds?! This is a private family matter! My wife is hysterical!”
“You are under arrest for attempted murder, felony domestic battery, conspiracy to commit fraud, and criminal administration of a controlled toxic substance,” Vance declared, stepping forward and snapping silver handcuffs around Ethan’s wrists.
“What?!” Evelyn shrieked, clutching her pearl necklace. “Poison?! That’s absurd! She’s lying! She’s mentally unstable!”
“Evelyn Vance,” Detective Vance turned to her with a razor-sharp smirk. “Don’t worry, we haven’t forgotten about you. Officers, cuff her too. We have six weeks of your text messages detailing how much rat poison and industrial solvent you were mixing into Elena’s evening tea.”
Evelyn’s face drained of all color. Her mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water. The arrogance that she had worn like armor for five years shattered into a thousand pieces right before my eyes.
As the officers hauled Ethan toward the door, he turned back to me, his eyes wide with a mixture of terror and fury.
“Elena, please!” he begged, his bravado entirely gone. “Talk to them! It was a joke! The group chat was just a joke! I love you! You know I love you!”
“You told me to put women in their place early,” I said, staring directly into his cowardly eyes. “Consider me placed.”
They dragged them out into the hallway. I could hear Evelyn screaming obscenities as the elevators closed, echoing down the pristine hospital floor.
I sank back into my pillows, trembling violently. Dr. Aris placed a comforting hand on my shoulder. “You’re safe now, Elena. The legal team is moving for an emergency protective order, and we are freezing all joint assets immediately.”
“No,” I said, wiping a tear from my cheek as a dark realization dawned on me. “We can’t just freeze the joint assets.”
Dr. Aris frowned. “Why?”
I looked at the detective. “Ethan’s father, Arthur... he wasn’t in that hallway when they came in. Where is Arthur?”
Detective Vance checked his radio. His face suddenly tightened. “Dispatch, this is Vance. Where is unit 4 holding Arthur Vance at the residence?”

Static crackled over the radio, followed by an urgent voice: “Unit 4 to Vance! The residence is secure, but Arthur Vance isn’t here! His vehicle is gone, and the safe in the master bedroom has been cleaned out!”
I looked at Detective Vance, my heart pounding against my bruised ribs. “Arthur didn’t just run,” I whispered. “Arthur is the chairman of the regional bank where my company handles its multi-million-dollar offshore portfolios. He didn’t run from the police... he went to scrub the bank’s servers.”
