Chapter 7 - ASHES OF THE EMPIREThe sun rising over Lake Michigan painted the winter sky in brutal shades of iron gray and bruised purple.

From the reinforced windows of his underground command center three stories beneath the estate, Nicholas Vescari watched the news broadcasts flicker across a wall of twelve digital monitors. Local anchors breathlessly reported the largest coordinated federal raid in Chicago's history—a massive sweep that had effectively dismantled the Rivas crime syndicate overnight.

Over forty arrests. Seizures totaling more than fifty million dollars in contraband, real estate, and offshore accounts.

And at the center of it all, the downfall of Chloe Harrington, whose glamorous socialite lifestyle was replaced by a federal booking photo that was already plastered across every major news outlet in the country.

"They're tearing her apart online," Marcus Vance said, tossing a tablet onto the metal desk in front of Nicholas. "Society columns are calling it the betrayal of the decade. Her family's corporate board has already distanced themselves from her entirely. She’s completely isolated."

Nicholas didn't look at the tablet. He was methodically cleaning the bolt carrier group of a Sig Sauer pistol, his movements precise, calm, and deliberate.

"Isolation is a much better punishment for someone like Chloe than a prison cell," Nicholas said quietly. "She spent her entire life surrounded by people she didn't care about, using them as stepping stones. Now she’ll spend the next twenty years in a box where nobody knows her name and nobody cares."

"And Victor?" Marcus asked.

"Victor is locked in a federal supermax three states away. His uncle suffered a stroke the moment he heard the news of the raid. The Rivas family is finished. They won't pose a threat to our shipping lanes for the next generation."

Marcus nodded slowly, leaning against the edge of the console. "So, what’s next, boss? The waterfront is ours, the rats are cleaned out, and the board is terrified to speak out of turn. Do we expand north?"

Nicholas paused, his fingers resting on the metal slide of his weapon. He thought back to the fourteen days he had spent lying beneath that white hospital blanket, listening to the world move on without him, listening to whispers in the dark, and remembering the feeling of a rough, calloused hand wiping the sweat from his forehead.

Power was a cage, built out of fear, money, and suspicion. He had spent his entire life making sure no one could ever get close enough to hurt him, only to realize that the fortress he built had become a tomb.

"No, Marcus," Nicholas said, setting the pistol down on the desk with a soft metallic click. "We don't expand north."

"Then what?"

"We consolidate," Nicholas said, standing up and buttoning the cuffs of his dark shirt. "And we change how this organization does business. From now on, loyalty isn't bought with fear. It’s earned with security."
