Chapter 3 - The Audit Trail"Ladies and gentlemen," I said, my voice echoing clearly through the vaulted ceiling of the ballroom. "Please check your phones."

A collective rustle filled the room as hundreds of devices buzzed simultaneously.

"Every investor, board member, and primary stakeholder has just received a comprehensive forensic audit report compiled by independent investigators over the last ninety days," I continued, holding the microphone steady. "It details every diverted asset, every falsified board resolution, and every shell company Grant Mercer and Dana Cole have utilized to siphon over twenty-five million dollars from Carter Land and Development."

At Table 4, Dana burst into tears, burying her face in her hands as her phone buzzed relentlessly with notifications from corporate counsel, tax authorities, and banking partners.

Grant lunged forward, his hands reaching for the microphone in a desperate, last-ditch attempt to cut off the broadcast. "Stop her! She’s hacking the systems! She’s deranged!"

Before his fingers could graze the metal, a heavy hand gripped his shoulder and spun him around.

It was Detective Miller of the Charlotte-Meade Financial Crimes Unit, flanked by two uniformed officers.

"Grant Mercer," Detective Miller said, his voice crisp and official as he pulled a pair of gleaming steel cuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for corporate fraud, wire fraud, forgery, and embezzlement. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

"You can't do this!" Grant roared, thrashing as the cuffs clicked shut around his wrists. "Do you know who I am? I am the face of Carter Land! This is a coup! Evelyn, tell them! Tell them this is a marital dispute!"

"It was a marriage, Grant," I replied softly, watching as the officers hauled my husband toward the service exit, past the stunned faces of our high-society guests. "Now, it's just a prosecution."

The heavy oak doors slammed shut behind him, cutting off his furious shouting.

The ballroom remained frozen. The string quartet had long since stopped playing. The twenty-foot screen behind me now displayed a simple, elegant logo: Carter Land and Development — Established 1984. Truth, Integrity, Foundation.

I looked out across the room, meeting the eyes of our oldest investors, board members, and family friends. For the first time in ten years, I didn't feel small. I didn't feel like I was standing in someone else's shadow.

"Ladies and gentlemen," I announced calmly, lowering the microphone. "Dinner is served. And for those of you who wish to discuss the future of the company, my office opens at eight o'clock tomorrow morning."
