Chapter 2 - The Digital Ledger

The emergency room at St. Jude’s Memorial smelled of industrial disinfectant and stale coffee.

Emily had finally fallen into an exhausted, pain-medicated sleep in Room 4, her arm immobilized in a bulky temporary cast. The X-rays had confirmed the worst: two metacarpals cleanly snapped, severe soft-tissue crushing, and hairline fractures across her knuckles. The orthopedic surgeon on call didn't even try to hide his disgust when he pulled me into the hallway.

"In my twenty years of practice, I rarely see crush injuries like this from a mere 'accident'," the doctor said, folding his arms. "This required significant downward force, sustained pressure, or a heavy mechanism. Did something fall on her?"

"No," I replied, staring through the small glass window at my sleeping daughter. "A fifteen-year-old boy slammed a heavy metal pool hatch onto her hand on purpose."

The doctor’s jaw tightened. "We're legally mandated to file a report with Child Protective Services for injuries of this nature, especially given the pattern of swelling and bruising. But... I must warn you, if there's family pushback, it helps to have documentation."

I pulled out my phone. "Doctor, I have a digital ledger dating back two years, plus a cloud folder containing over thirty videos recorded by the perpetrator himself."

The doctor raised an eyebrow. "Then I suggest you forward those directly to the investigating officer at the front desk. Because based on what I just saw on those X-rays, this isn't just a family dispute. This is a felony."

While Lisa stayed by Emily’s side, I walked out to the waiting area. My phone buzzed incessantly in my pocket.

Missed call from Mother. Missed call from Sarah. Text message from Michael: Daniel, let's not act like savages. Call me before you ruin everything over a stupid mistake.

I ignored them all. Instead, I opened a group chat that included my entire extended family—a chat my parents had created years ago to share vacation photos and holiday updates.

Without a word of introduction, I uploaded the first three videos from Tyler's folder directly into the chat. The video of the fruit punch. The video of Tyler pushing Emily into a muddy flowerbed. And the video of the pool hatch, filmed from a slightly different angle that clearly showed Tyler locking eyes with Emily, smiling, and dropping the heavy iron lid with both hands.

Within thirty seconds, the group chat exploded.

Sarah: Daniel, delete this right now! Where did you get that? Tyler's phone was hacked! You're invading his privacy!

Michael: This is out of context. Boys play rough. Taking things out of proportion is why the family is falling apart.

Mother: Daniel, please come home and talk about this like a civilized man. Do not ruin your nephew's life over a childhood prank.

I tapped the screen and typed a single message back to the group.

The police are viewing these right now at St. Jude's. Tell Tyler to pack a bag. He's going to need a very good lawyer.

Silence fell over the chat. No one replied. But ten minutes later, my phone rang with a restricted number. I answered immediately.

"Mr. Vance?" a deep, professional voice asked. "This is Detective Harris with the County Sheriff's Department. I'm reviewing the files you submitted online. I'm outside Room 4 right now. We need to talk about your nephew."
