Chapter 5 - The Subpoena

The juvenile court hearing was scheduled for the following Tuesday morning.
Because Tyler was fifteen, the district attorney initially considered trying him as a youthful offender rather than an adult, given the severity of the premeditated assault and the documented history of harassment. However, the discovery process unmasked a digital treasure trove that changed the prosecution's calculus entirely.
On Friday afternoon, a process server handed me a massive manila envelope at my office.
Inside wasn't a counter-suit from Michael, as we half-expected. It was a formal subpoena from the state prosecutor’s office, accompanied by a thumb drive containing forensic extractions of Tyler’s entire digital footprint, pulled by cyber-investigators from the seized phone.
Lisa and I sat at the kitchen table that night after Emily went to sleep, scrolling through the files the detective had flagged for us.
"Oh, my God," Lisa whispered, scrolling past a folder labeled Pranks.
It wasn't just Emily.
Tyler had been documenting his reign of terror across the entire neighborhood for over three years. There were videos of him tripping younger kids on the middle school track, locking a classmate inside a janitor's supply closet for four hours, and systematically bullying vulnerable kids online through fake social media burner accounts.
And right there, nested in a hidden folder, was a group chat between Tyler and three of his varsity football teammates.
The messages sent just ten minutes after he crushed Emily's hand made my blood run cold.
Tyler: Just smashed my annoying cousin's hand in the pool hatch lol. She started crying like a baby. Teammate 1: Bro, did anyone see? Tyler: Nah, my uncle tried to act tough, but my dad shoved an incident paper at him and made him back down. Total pussy. Teammate 2: Legend. Ready for practice tomorrow?
I stared at the screen, the glowing light reflecting in my eyes. Michael hadn't just reacted in the heat of the moment at the pool party. He had known. He had coached Tyler on how to intimidate us. He had prepared the incident statement before the ambulance even arrived, assuming his intimidation tactics would work just like they always had.
I picked up my phone and dialed Detective Harris directly.
"Detective," I said without preamble. "I have additional evidence regarding accessory involvement and premeditated witness intimidation by an adult."
"I'm listening, Mr. Vance," the detective replied calmly. "Send it over. And by the way... you might want to sit down for this. We just added a felony charge of obstruction of justice and witness tampering to the case file. But it’s not against Tyler."
May you like
"Who is it against?" I asked.
"Michael Vance. Tyler’s father."
