Chapter 1 - The Heavy Boot on the ThresholdThe shadow in the shattered doorway didn't belong to just any ordinary patrolman.

As the heavy footsteps crossed the threshold, the harsh light of the hallway illuminated the sharp, unmistakable brass insignia of Master Chief Petty Officer Marcus Vance. His uniform was immaculate despite the ungodly hour, his broad shoulders filling the broken frame of Ava’s apartment door like a wall of solid granite.
Richard Lawson’s face drained of what little color it had left. The whiskey-soaked bravado that had fueled his violent rampage evaporated, leaving behind a pathetic, trembling coward who suddenly realized he was standing in the jurisdiction of the United States Armed Forces—not a domestic dispute where he could manipulate local police with a smooth tongue and crocodile tears.
“Security forces! Stand down and place your hands where I can see them!” Master Chief Vance’s voice was a low, seismic rumble that vibrated through the floorboards.
Richard instinctively stepped back, his hands flying up defensively. “Now wait just a minute, Chief. This is a family matter. This ungrateful little—ouch!”
Before Richard could finish his slanderous excuse, Vance moved with the terrifying, practiced efficiency of a combat veteran. In less than three seconds, Richard was slammed face-first against the kitchen counter, his right arm twisted into a painful compliance hold, and a pair of heavy-duty tactical zip-ties locked tightly around his wrists.
“You’re currently trespassing on federal military housing, you’ve broken down a reinforced security door, and you’ve assaulted an active-duty commissioned officer of the United States Navy,” Vance recited coldly, pressing Richard’s forehead deeper against the laminate counter. “Family matter? Not tonight, pal.”
From her position on the floor beneath the kitchen table, Ava watched through a swelling, blood-rimmed eye. The metallic taste of copper filled her mouth, and her dislocated shoulder radiated white-hot agony with every shallow breath she took. Yet, a profound wave of dark, vindictive satisfaction washed over her.
Richard thought he had trapped her in the dark. He had no idea he had just walked straight into a cage of her own making.
“Chief…” Ava croaked, her voice rasped and raw.
Vance’s head snapped toward her, his expression instantly shifting from stone-cold predator to fierce protector. He shoved Richard roughly into the custody of two armed shore patrolmen who had just flooded into the room behind him, and rushed to Ava’s side.
“Lieutenant Reynolds! Stay still, don't move your arm. Medic team is right behind me—they’re coming up the stairwell now,” Vance said urgently, gently hovering his massive hands over her battered frame, ensuring he didn't worsen her injuries.
“Don't let him out of your sight, Chief,” Ava whispered, her vision swimming at the edges as darkness threatened to pull her under. “He thinks he’s untouchable. Make sure he stays right where the Navy can chew him up.”

A grim, humorless smile touched the corners of Vance’s mouth. “Don't worry, Lieutenant. The Navy takes care of its own. And right now? Your stepfather is about to learn what happens when you wage war on a United States warship's crew.”
As the shrill whine of approaching military ambulances echoed up from the tarmac outside, the apartment door swung fully open, framing a scene straight out of a military tribunal’s worst nightmare.
