Chapter 3 - The Siege of the EstateOutside the shattered wrought-iron gates, the red and blue flashing lights of a lone patrol car flickered through the heavy fog. Rookie Officer Marcus Vance—no relation, just an unfortunate coincidence of geography—stepped out of his cruiser, hand instinctively resting on his holstered service weapon.

"Dispatch, this is Unit 42," Marcus spoke into his shoulder mic, his voice tight with nervous energy. "I’m responding to an automated perimeter breach alarm at the Vance Manor on Crestwood Ridge. The front gates are completely destroyed. Requesting backup immediately."

“Copy, Unit 42. Backup is ten minutes out. Exercise caution; that’s a high-profile residence,” dispatch crackled back through the static.

Marcus swallowed hard. The sprawling estate was perched on a jagged cliff overlooking the crashing waves of the Pacific, isolated from neighbors by dense pine forests and iron fences. Tonight, bathed in an eerie fog, the mansion looked less like a home and more like a gothic fortress of doom.

He walked up the long gravel driveway, crunching over scattered bits of twisted steel and pulverized stone that used to be the security gate. The front double doors of the mansion were blown wide open, casting a long, rectangular beam of amber light onto the porch.

"Hello? Police department! Is anyone in there?" Marcus called out, drawing his pistol and holding it at a low ready.

No answer came. Only the low, mournful howl of the wind sweeping off the cliffside.

Inside the grand foyer, the atmosphere was thick enough to choke on. Michael was backed into a corner near the grand staircase, his breathing ragged and hysterical, while Julian stood impassive a few paces away, cleaning the flat edge of his combat knife with a white linen handkerchief he had taken from Michael’s own breast pocket.

"You hear that?" Michael whispered frantically, his eyes darting toward the open doors. "The police are here. If you kill me, Julian, you’ll spend the rest of your life in a supermax prison. You can't escape this!"

Julian didn't look up from the blade. "The police officer outside is young, inexperienced, and terrified. He called for backup, which won't arrive for another eight minutes. Plenty of time, Michael."

"Uncle Jules," little Mia tugged gently on the hem of his turtleneck, her small voice cutting through the tension. "The nice policeman is outside. He helped me find my lost kitten once at the charity gala."

Julian immediately knelt down to her eye level, his terrifying aura vanishing instantly. He placed both hands gently on her shoulders. "Mia, listen to me very carefully. I need you to walk out those front doors, find Officer Marcus, and give him this flash drive."

Julian pulled a small, encrypted thumb drive from his tactical vest and placed it in her small palm. "Tell him it contains every single financial record, offshore bank transfer, and confession recording of everything your father has done. It’s ironclad proof. The police will take you to a safe house, and you will be completely protected. Do you understand?"

"And what about you?" Mia asked, her hazel eyes welling up with tears again. "Are you coming with us?"

"I have some loose ends to tie up with your father," Julian said with a reassuring, gentle smile that didn't quite reach his eyes. "I’ll meet you on the other side. Now go. Run straight to the officer and don't look back."

Mia threw her arms around Julian’s neck, hugging him tightly. "Please don't die, Uncle Jules."

"I'm too stubborn to die, sweetheart," Julian whispered, kissing her forehead one last time.

He stood up and watched as the little girl turned and ran swiftly toward the open front doors, disappearing into the foggy night air.

Michael watched her go with a mixture of rage and relief. "You let her go... Good. That means you still have a shred of humanity left. We can make a deal, Julian—"

"Quiet, Michael," Julian snapped, turning back with the knife gleaming in his hand. "That wasn't mercy. That was clearing the stage."

At that moment, Officer Marcus stepped cautiously across the threshold of the foyer, his service pistol raised. "Police! Drop whatever you're holding—"

Before Marcus could finish his warning, a small, warm hand tugged urgently at his trouser leg. He looked down to see little Mia staring up at him, holding out a small silver flash drive.

"Officer Marcus, my uncle Julian says you need to take this and protect me," Mia said steadily.

Marcus blinked in sheer bewilderment, lowering his weapon slightly. "Mia? What in the world happened here? Who is—"

Before he could process the scene, the heavy oak front doors suddenly slammed shut with a thunderous bang, driven by an automated override system controlled from Julian’s tactical console. The heavy deadbolts slid into place with a definitive, mechanical click, locking Marcus and Mia securely outside on the porch, while sealing Julian and Michael inside the tomb of the foyer.

"Hey! Open this door! Police!" Marcus banged frantically on the thick wood, twisting the brass handle, but it was completely deadlocked.

Inside the sealed foyer, Michael stared at the closed doors in sudden, renewed horror. He realized what Julian had done.

"You locked them out," Michael whispered, his voice trembling uncontrollably. "You... you're going to finish it."

Julian slowly rolled up his sleeves, revealing a network of old scars and hard muscle. He stepped toward his brother, the shadow of the grand staircase swallowing them both.

"Family meeting, Michael," Julian said softly. "Let's talk about what you did five years ago."
