Chapter 5 - Dawn of the New HeirThe morning sun broke over Crestwood Ridge, casting a golden, ethereal glow across the jagged cliffs and the sprawling, infamous Vance Estate. But the golden light could do nothing to wash away the stains of the night before.

Yellow police tape cordoned off the grand entrance. Forensic vans, unmarked federal vehicles, and county coroner transport units filled the sweeping gravel driveway. Paramedics rolled a covered gurney out through the front doors, carefully navigating the shattered threshold where Victoria Vance had drawn her last breath.
Across the lawn, standing near the edge of the cliff overlooking the crashing Pacific waves, seven-year-old Mia clutched a warm cup of hot cocoa in both hands. Her knees were bandaged, but her posture was upright and steady. Standing right beside her was Officer Marcus, who had volunteered to stay through the morning shift to ensure her safety.
A few yards away, federal agents escorted Michael Vance out of the mansion in heavy steel handcuffs. His sharp black tuxedo was torn, stained with glass dust and blood, and his head hung low in utter humiliation as flashbulbs from early-morning tabloid reporters—tipped off by anonymous sources—popped furiously in the damp air. He didn't look up, knowing his empire, his freedom, and his legacy were completely vaporized.
Julian walked out onto the stone porch, dressed now in a simple black wool coat, his hands tucked deep into his pockets. He watched Michael get pushed into the back of a federal transport van, the heavy steel doors slamming shut with a final, echoing crash.
Julian turned his gaze toward the cliffside, locking eyes with little Mia.
He walked slowly across the manicured lawn, his boots crunching softly on the morning dew, until he stood right in front of her. He knelt down to her eye level, gentle and protective.
"How are you holding up, sweetheart?" Julian asked softly.
Mia took a small sip of her hot cocoa, her hazel eyes reflecting the bright morning sky. "I'm okay, Uncle Jules. Mommy is finally at peace, right?"
"Yes, Mia," Julian replied, his voice thick with emotion as he gently brushed a stray lock of hair from her forehead. "She's at peace. And you are never, ever going to be afraid again. I promise you that."
"Are we going to live in this big house now?" Mia asked, looking back at the imposing gothic architecture of the Vance Manor.
Julian stood up, offering her his hand. A faint, knowing smile touched the corners of his lips.
May you like
"No, Mia. We're going to burn this place down to the foundations and build something new," Julian said firmly, taking her small hand in his large, calloused grip. "A real home. Come on. Let's go home."
As they walked together down the driveway toward a waiting black sedan, leaving the ghosts of the past behind them, the heavy iron gates—shattered and broken—swung gently in the morning ocean breeze. The reign of terror was over, but the true legacy of the Vance bloodline was only just beginning.
