Chapter 9 - THE ULTIMATE BETRAYAL"You ruined everything, Julian!" Victor snarled, advancing step by step, his weapon locked on his brother's chest. "If you hadn't leaked the registry codes, Marcus would never have known the child was in the city!"

"I didn't leak anything, you paranoid idiot!" Julian yelled back, dodging as a sniper bullet from the overhead chopper chipped the concrete pillar beside him. "Marcus was working for you the whole time! Or did you forget that you signed his clearance to audit the inner archives last month?!"

Victor froze for a fraction of a second. That tiny hesitation was all Marcus Vance needed.

From the deck of the leading tactical chopper, a heavy sniper rifle cracked with a thunderous roar.

Thud.

Victor stumbled violently forward, dropping his weapon as a crimson stain bloomed rapidly across his shoulder.

"Victor!" I screamed before I could stop myself. Despite everything, the man who had sheltered us, the man who had looked at Lily with genuine recognition and sorrow, was bleeding out in front of my eyes.

"Hannah... run..." Victor choked out, collapsing to one knee on the blood-slicked wood.

Before Julian could pull Victor behind cover, a deafening explosion ripped through the end of the pier. Marcus Vance’s assault team had landed. A dozen heavily armed mercenaries poured out of the transport boat, cutting off our only escape route to the water.

"Game over, gentlemen," Marcus Vance sneered, stepping off the ramp of the transport boat with an assault rifle casually slung over his shoulder. He looked down at Victor, then his cold, calculating eyes shifted to me and the baby carrier in my arms.

"Hand over the girl, Hannah," Marcus said smoothly, taking a slow step forward. "And I'll let you and your uncle live to see sunrise."
