Chapter 7 - The Final Stand

"Hands on your head! Do it now!" the lead operative shouted, his voice mechanically distorted through his helmet's comms unit.

I stood my ground at the foot of the grand staircase, gripping the iron fireplace poker like a medieval broadsword. My mind raced through every possible tactical advantage. I couldn't outgun three trained mercenaries with assault rifles, but I knew every inch of this house better than anyone alive.

"You're wasting your time," I said, stepping backward toward the shadow of the upper landing. "The federal authorities were already notified before your little system override took down my console. They'll be back here in five minutes."

"The feds won't breach the outer perimeter until we're long gone with what we came for," the operative sneered, taking slow, calculated steps toward the staircase. "Marcus was just a distraction. Our target has always been the Carter family estate—and the offshore accounts linked to your biometric signature."

They wanted everything. My fortune, my company, my legacy—and if they found Claire and the twins in the panic room, they would use them as the ultimate leverage.

I couldn't let that happen.

As the lead operative lunged forward to grab my arm, I swung the heavy iron poker with every ounce of strength I had, smashing it directly into his weapon barrel and knocking the assault rifle aside. Sparks flew against the stone floor.

The second operative instantly raised his rifle, aiming straight at my chest. "Drop it!"

Before he could pull the trigger, the lights throughout the entire mansion suddenly flickered, died, and then flared back to life in a blinding strobe of emergency crimson.

A loud, electronic hum reverberated through the floors.

Clack. Whir.

The smart-home security system hadn't just been hacked by them—it had been running a secondary counter-protocol programmed by my elite chief of security before he was locked in the panic room. The estate's automated defensive sprinklers and high-pressure carbon dioxide suppression valves activated simultaneously in the grand foyer.

Thick, freezing white clouds billowed from the ceiling vents, blinding the operatives instantly.

"What is this? I can't see!" the lead operative yelled, coughing violently as the heavy gas disoriented them.

I didn't hesitate. I dropped the iron poker, lunged through the dense fog, and tackled the second operative against the marble pillar, sending his weapon clattering across the slick floor. With a swift, adrenaline-fueled strike, I brought my elbow down hard against his helmet visor, sending him crashing unconscious to the ground.

The third operative fired blindly into the ceiling, the deafening cracks echoing through the grand hall, but before he could swing his rifle toward me, heavy footsteps thundered through the front doorway.

"FBI! Federal Law Enforcement! Drop your weapons!"

State troopers and federal tactical units swarmed the foyer from the ruined front entrance, their high-intensity tactical lights cutting through the white fog. Within seconds, the remaining two mercenaries were pinned to the floor, disarmed, and cuffed.

The smoke slowly cleared. I stood in the center of the grand foyer, bruised, breathless, but completely alive.
