Chapter 2 - The Sinking Foundation

By Thursday evening, the atmosphere in the house had curdled from chilly to toxic.
Julian cornered me in the hallway while I was folding laundry. He looked exhausted, the dark circles under his eyes mapping the stress of being caught between a ruthless wife and a mother he had never learned to stand up to.
"Mom, come on," Julian muttered, rubbing the back of his neck. "Just sign the paper. Why are you making such a massive deal out of this? Chloe is just stressed with the agency launch. If we put our names on the deed, it keeps everything clean. Insurance, taxes, all of it. Why do you have to be so stubborn?"
I stopped folding a pillowcase. I looked at my son—the boy I had raised to be kind, who had grown into a man too cowardly to protect the woman who gave him life.
"Julian," I said softly, looking him dead in the eye. "Whose money bought this house?"
He flinched, looking down at the worn hardwood floorboards. "You know it’s yours, technically. But Dad’s life insurance—"
"Your father’s life insurance policy was paid out ten years ago," I interrupted, my voice dropping an octave, carrying a steel he hadn't heard in decades. "Every penny of that down payment came from the consulting work I did after he passed, paired with the sale of my mother’s vintage jewelry and five years of strict budgeting while living in this very house listening to you and your wife argue above my ceiling. Not one cent of it belongs to you. And certainly not to Chloe."
"She’s my wife, Mom! Her thoughts are my thoughts!"
"Then perhaps you should move with her into her thoughts, because as of Friday morning, my physical body is checking out of this hotel," I said, turning my back on him and walking into my bedroom.
That night, sleep refused to come. I lay staring at the ceiling, listening to the muffled creak of footsteps overhead. Chloe was pacing. I knew that pacing; it was the rhythmic march of a strategist plotting her next move.
At 2:00 AM, a sharp ping echoed from my phone on the nightstand.
It was an email from Apex Title & Escrow, the agency handling my townhouse purchase.
URGENT: Notice of Inquiry Regarding Title Status. Dear Ms. Hayes, our office has received a formal inquiry from legal representation acting on behalf of Mr. Julian Vance and Mrs. Chloe Vance, claiming potential community property and familial estate entanglement regarding the purchase of [Address Hidden]. Disbursement of final closing documents has been placed on a temporary administrative hold pending verification of funds.

My breath caught in my throat.
They hadn't just been talking. They had weaponized a lawyer in the middle of the night. Chloe hadn't spent the evening watching Netflix; she had spent it drafting an injunction to freeze my new life before it could even begin.
