Chapter 15 - The Leak

Twenty-four hours after the tense standoff in the Pentagon briefing room, the digital landscape of the nation detonated.
I was sitting in my office at Fort Liberty, reviewing Maya’s medical discharge paperwork, when Major Thomas burst through the door without knocking, holding a tablet in his hand with his eyes wide with shock.
"Colonel, you need to see this right now," Thomas said, spinning the tablet around and placing it on my desk.
The screen displayed the homepage of a major independent investigative journalism network. The headline blazed across the screen in bold red letters: THE VANCE PAPERS: HOW A CORRUPT POLITICAL SYNDICATE SOLD AMERICA TO THE HIGHEST BIDDER—AND THE ARMY COLONEL WHO EXPOSED THEM.
Below the headline was a fully searchable, unredacted digital copy of the entire ledger recovered from the Wilmington pier, complete with bank transfers, recorded phone calls, and signed affidavits detailing millions of dollars in bribes flowing between Charlotte elites and federal lawmakers in Washington.
I stared at the screen, a slow, grim smile touching the corner of my mouth. "They didn't want to bury it after all."
"Ma'am, it wasn't us," Thomas said, shaking his head. "Whoever leaked this didn't use military servers. The data dump originated from a secure IP address inside the Department of Justice itself. Someone inside the federal bureaucracy decided they were tired of protecting the syndicate."
My phone rang instantly. The caller ID displayed a restricted, high-priority Washington prefix. I picked it up and pressed it to my ear.
"Colonel Vance," Undersecretary Sterling’s voice hissed through the receiver, sounding breathless, exhausted, and utterly defeated. "Are you happy now? The dam has burst. The Attorney General has just announced the formation of an independent special counsel to investigate every single name in that ledger. Half of Congress is calling for emergency hearings."
"I'm just a mother who wanted justice for her daughter, Mr. Secretary," I replied calmly. "It sounds like the system is finally working the way it was designed to."
"You have no idea what you've unleashed," Sterling snapped before abruptly hanging up the phone.

I set the receiver down and looked out the window across the sunlit parade grounds of Fort Liberty. In the distance, I could see Maya walking slowly across the grass, leaning on a cane, her head held high as the warm autumn wind caught her hair. She was healing. The nightmares were fading. And the monsters who had tried to break her were facing a reckoning they could never escape.
But as the political world burned in Washington, an entirely new threat was quietly gathering its forces in the shadows—one that had watched the fall of the Vance family and decided it was time to eliminate the Colonel who refused to bow.
