Chapter 6 - THE SILENT NURSERYWhen I opened my eyes, the harsh white glare of fluorescent hospital lights blinded me. The air smelled strongly of antiseptic and rubbing alcohol. The rhythmic beep of a heart monitor echoed beside my bed.

I sat up instantly, a wave of dizziness washing over me.
"My baby!" I gasped, clutching my stomach.
The heavy bump was gone.
"Quiet now, Mrs. Carter. You need to rest."
A nurse stepped into my field of vision, gently adjusting the IV line in my arm.
"Where is my child?!" I demanded, panic surging through my veins like fire. "Where is my husband?!"
"Your baby boy was delivered via emergency C-section four hours ago," the nurse said with a warm, reassuring smile. "He was born slightly premature, but his lungs are strong. He is currently in the neonatal intensive care unit under observation. He is perfectly healthy."
A massive wave of relief washed over me, tears of pure joy springing to my eyes. "A boy... I had a boy..."
"And my husband? Ethan Carter?"
The nurse’s smile flickered, replaced by a subtle hesitation. "Mr. Carter was brought to the ICU on the fourth floor. He underwent surgery for internal bleeding. He is in stable condition, but... he is currently under 24-hour guard."
"Guard? Why?"
"Detective Thorne placed a restriction on all visitors," she explained softly. "No one is allowed in his room without federal authorization."
Thorne.
Memory flooded back like a torrent: Thorne burning page forty-two of the red ledger in the library. Thorne taking control of the scene. Thorne isolating us.
Thorne wasn't saving us. He was Apex’s insurance policy.
I pulled the heart monitor pads off my chest. The machine began to beep frantically in error.
"Mrs. Carter! What are you doing? You just had major surgery!" the nurse cried, reaching out to stop me.
"Get away from me!" I said, swinging my legs over the side of the bed. Pain ripped across my lower abdomen, but I gritted my teeth, forcing myself to stand up. "I need to see my son. Now."
"Mrs. Carter, please—"
"Take me to my son, or I will scream so loud this entire hospital hears it!" I threatened, my voice cold and lethal.
The nurse swallowed hard, nodding rapidly. "Okay. Okay. I’ll bring a wheelchair."
Five minutes later, I was being wheeled down the dim, quiet hallways of the maternity wing toward the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The hospital was dead silent, the clock on the wall reading 3:15 AM.
We arrived at the large glass windows of the nursery. Inside, sitting in a small clear incubator, was my son. He had tiny tufts of dark hair—just like Ethan’s—and was wrapped tightly in a blue blanket.
"Can I hold him?" I whispered, my voice breaking.
"Only for a few minutes," the nurse said softly, opening the heavy security door and leading me inside.
I stood up from the wheelchair, leaning heavily on the plastic frame of the incubator. I reached through the circular side openings, gently resting my hand against my baby's chest. He stirred softly, clutching my pinky finger with his tiny, perfect hand.
"Hi, my little miracle," I whispered, tears dripping onto the plastic cover. "I won't let anyone hurt you. I promise."
"That's a very touching promise, Sarah."
A voice spoke from the dark corner of the nursery.
I froze.
A shadow shifted near the back emergency door. Stepping into the soft blue light of the nursery monitors was Madison Carter—my sister-in-law, who was supposed to be in police custody.
She wasn't wearing handcuffs. She was dressed in a nurse's uniform, her hair tied back, holding a syringe filled with a clear liquid.
"Madison..." I whispered, stepping back against the incubator, shielding my son with my body. "How are you here? The police arrested you!"
Madison let out a soft, mocking laugh. "The LAPD? Sarah, do you really still not understand how deep Apex goes? My mother and I don't go to jail. We own the people who build the jails."
"What do you want?" I demanded, my heart slamming against my ribs.
"I want what’s mine," Madison sneered, stepping closer, her eyes gleaming with manic intensity. "You stole Ethan. You stole the family legacy. And now you’ve birthed the ultimate threat to our trust fund."
She raised the syringe, her thumb resting on the plunger.

"Victor failed to kill you in Malibu," Madison whispered, her smile twisting into something monstrous. "So I’m going to make sure Ethan wakes up to a dead baby and a wife who died of 'post-partum complications'."
She lunged forward with the needle aimed straight at my neck.
