Chapter 7 - THE UNRAVELING MASKAdrenaline surged through my veins, obliterating the pain from my surgical incision. As Madison plunged the syringe toward my throat, I ducked beneath her arm, grabbing her wrist with both hands and driving her forward into the stainless steel drug cart.

CRASH!
Bottles of saline and medical equipment smashed onto the floor. Madison shrieked in rage, swinging her elbow back and catching me across the cheekbone.
I stumbled back, hitting the wall hard, but I kept my body firmly positioned between Madison and my baby’s incubator.
"You pathetic orphan!" Madison spat, recovering her footing and coming at me again, her manicured nails reaching for my eyes. "You don't belong in this family! You're nothing!"
I didn't argue. I didn't hesitate. I grabbed a heavy metal IV pole standing beside the wall and swung it with all the strength left in my body, striking Madison squarely across the shoulder and ribs.
Madison crashed into the floor with a painful groan, the syringe slipping from her fingers and shattering on the hard tile floor.
Before she could push herself back up, the glass door of the nursery was kicked open.
Detective Marcus Thorne rushed in, gun drawn, flanked by two armed federal marshals.
"Freeze! LAPD!" Thorne shouted.
"Thorne!" Madison screamed from the floor, looking up at him with desperation. "Shoot her! Shoot her now! She attacked me!"
Thorne looked at Madison, then looked down at the shattered syringe on the floor. His face remained completely expressionless.
He didn't aim his gun at me.
He walked over, grabbed Madison by the back of her collar, and dragged her to her feet, roughly twisting her arms behind her back.
"Madison Carter," Thorne said coldly, snapping a pair of steel handcuffs around her wrists. "You are under federal arrest for attempted murder, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy."
Madison stared at him in disbelief. "Thorne?! What are you doing?! My mother paid you two million dollars! You work for Apex!"
Thorne reached into his breast pocket, pulled out a metallic badge, and flipped it open.
"FBI Internal Affairs," Thorne said calmly. "I’ve been working undercover inside Apex and the LAPD corrupt network for four years, Madison. I was waiting for your family to make a move against Ethan’s estate so we could arrest the entire leadership structure in one sweep."
My jaw dropped. "You... you're FBI?"
Thorne looked at me and offered a small, respectful nod. "I apologize for the dramatics at the mansion, Mrs. Carter. I had to play the part of a corrupt cop to force Apex’s remaining field assets—like Madison—out into the open."
"Page forty-two..." I stammered, remembering the fire in the library. "You burned the page in the red ledger!"
"I burned a fake page that I substituted while Ethan was unconscious," Thorne explained, pulling a pristine, unburned piece of paper from his jacket and handing it to me. "I needed Apex to believe the evidence of Arthur Carter’s trust disbursements was destroyed so they wouldn't attempt to destroy the federal vault."
I took the paper with trembling hands. My eyes scanned the official legal text on the document.
As I read the words, tears began to stream down my face—not tears of horror, but tears of overwhelming, miraculous relief.
"This... this isn't an adoption record," I gasped, looking up at Thorne.
"No," Thorne smiled gently. "Arthur Carter didn't adopt you, Sarah. Arthur Carter was the trustee of a charitable foundation created for children of deceased naval officers. Your biological father was Captain David Vance—a decorated war hero who died in action twenty-six years ago."
I covered my mouth, sob racking my chest. "I'm... I'm not Ethan's sister?"
"You are David Vance’s daughter," Thorne confirmed softly. "Evelyn and Victor knew this all along. They knew that if Ethan died, Captain Vance’s estate—which held thirty percent of Carter Enterprises' founding shares—would automatically pass to you as his sole living heir. They invented the lie about you being Arthur's daughter to mentally shatter Ethan and force you to surrender your rights."
Madison began screaming hysterically as the federal marshals dragged her out of the nursery. "It’s a lie! She’s nothing! She’s trash!"
Her screams faded down the hallway as the heavy doors swung shut.
Thorne turned back to me, his expression warm. "Your husband is awake, Sarah. The doctors cleared him ten minutes ago. And there’s someone waiting to see you."
The sliding door opened once more.
Standing in the doorway, wearing a hospital gown with an IV tree in one hand, leaning against the frame for support, was Ethan.
His eyes were filled with tears as he looked at me, then at the tiny incubator behind me.

"Sarah..." Ethan choked out, his voice raw with emotion.
I ran across the room, throwing my arms around his waist, burying my face into his chest as he wrapped his arms tightly around me, holding me like he would never let me go again.
