Chapter 9 - THE ASHES OF THE EMPIREClara’s heart stopped. She stood frozen at the edge of the open trapdoor, Bruno pressing tightly against her side, his low whines vibrating through the stone floor.

"Matteo!" she screamed into the billowing smoke, ignoring the searing heat and the toxic fumes filling her lungs.
A heavy shadow emerged from the gray haze.
Matteo limped back into view, his black tuxedo ruined, his left shoulder drenched in blood, his face covered in soot and sweat. But in his right hand, the silver pistol was still gripped tight. He was swaying slightly on his feet, but he was standing.
He staggered forward, collapsing against the stone pillar inches from the trapdoor.
Clara didn't hesitate. She dropped to her knees beside him, pressing her hands against his bleeding shoulder to stem the flow of blood. "You idiot," she sobbed, a mix of furious relief and terror washing over her. "You absolute, arrogant idiot."
"Rossi... won't be bothering us anymore," Matteo breathed out, a faint, exhausted smirk touching his bloodied lips. He reached up, his trembling fingers gently brushing the tear tracks from her cheek. "Are you... satisfied now, Clara Vance? Is your revenge complete?"
Clara looked down at the man who had destroyed her family's livelihood three years ago—the same man who had just taken a bullet to protect her, who had risked his entire empire to keep her alive in a world built on blood. The hatred she had carried for three long years didn't feel righteous anymore; it felt like a ghost of a life she no longer belonged to.
"My father's warehouse was insured, Matteo," Clara whispered, her voice breaking as she looked into his dark eyes. "He didn't die because of the debt. He died because he gave up. But I... I never gave up."
Matteo’s eyes softened, a profound, heavy realization settling in his gaze. "Neither did I."
Footsteps echoed from the main stairwell above. More men were coming—surviving loyalists from Matteo's inner circle, led by his trusted head of security.

"Boss!" the guard shouted, rushing down the corridor with a medical kit. "We secured the perimeter. The Rossi loyalists have retreated. Are you—sweet Mother of God."
"Get the medical kit," Matteo ordered, his voice dropping back into its authoritative, dangerous register as he pulled Clara up beside him. He looked down at her, his hand sliding down to intertwine his fingers tightly with hers. "And notify the other capos. The Moretti Syndicate doesn't fall. It evolves."
