Chapter 10 - A New EmpireSix months later, the rain was falling gently over Baltimore Harbor, but inside the newly rebuilt Harbor Light Animal Care, it was warm, bright, and smelling faintly of organic eucalyptus and fresh coffee.

The clinic was no longer a modest, run-down shelter. Through a series of aggressively generous "anonymous donations" orchestrated by a certain billionaire shipping magnate, Harbor Light was now a state-of-the-art veterinary rehabilitation center, complete with modern surgical suites, an expanded recovery wing, and a custom-built, luxury-grade resting corner near the front desk.

Ruby Hart stood behind the gleaming new quartz counter, wearing a clean, professionally embroidered teal tunic, a fresh pair of comfortable sneakers, and a smile that reached all the way to her eyes.

The front bell chimed.

A tall man in a tailored charcoal suit stepped inside, shaking the light drizzle from his broad shoulders. He carried a heavy leather briefcase in one hand and a giant bag of gourmet dog biscuits in the other.

Caesar, whose shoulder had healed without a trace of a limp, immediately bounded out from the back recovery room, his tail wagging like a helicopter rotor as he trotted over to greet him.

Luca Marchetti knelt down, scratching the massive Cane Corso behind the ears before standing up and walking straight to the counter.

"Inspector general’s report came through this morning," Luca said casually, resting his forearms against the glass partition. "Moretti’s network is entirely dismantled. The docks are officially unified under Marchetti Maritime."

"Congratulations, Mr. Marchetti," Ruby said, leaning her chin in her hand with a playful glint in her eye. "Does that mean you're finally going to stop having your armed guards tail me when I go to the grocery store?"

Luca’s lips curved into a slow, devastating smile. He reached across the counter, gently catching a stray lock of hair and tucking it behind her ear. His fingers lingered warm against her cheek.

"Never," Luca murmured softly. "Some assets are simply too valuable to ever let out of my sight."

Before Ruby could think of a sufficiently sassy comeback, Caesar let out a soft, approving huff, leaned his full, hundred-and-fifty-pound weight directly across Luca’s polished Italian leather shoes, and settled in for the afternoon.

Luca looked down at his ruined shoes, then up at Ruby, his dark eyes filled with absolute, unshakable devotion.

Ruby just laughed, leaned over the counter, and kissed him.

Some rescue stories didn't just save an animal. Sometimes, they built an entire empire.
