Chapter 3 - The Siege of Harbor Light"Get down!" Luca barked, his voice carrying an absolute authority that brooked no argument.

Before Ruby could process the command, Luca grabbed her by the arm and hauled her behind the heavy steel-reinforced sorting table. Caesar didn't wait for an order; the massive dog leaped over the counter, positioning himself directly in front of them, his teeth bared toward the front glass.

Crash.

The front window of Harbor Light Animal Care shattered in a cascade of glittering glass. Shouts cut through the sound of the rain, followed immediately by the dull, rhythmic thump-thump of silenced gunfire chewing through the drywall. Plaster dust exploded into the air, raining down on Ruby's hair.

"They're using submachine guns!" Viktor yelled, returning fire from behind the structural pillar near the door. Two rapid pops echoed from his weapon, followed by the sound of glass shattering outside and a heavy thud against the pavement.

Ruby curled into a ball, her hands over her head. Her clinic—her safe haven, filled with rescue cages, bags of organic kibble, and recovery blankets—was turning into a war zone. Panic clawed at her throat, but beneath the terror, a hot, blinding rage began to rise.

This is my home, she thought. They are destroying my home.

"Luca!" she yelled over the deafening rattle of gunfire.

"Stay down!" he shouted back, firing two measured shots through a gap in the shelving unit.

"Your men are going to shred my pet shampoo display!" she screamed, her voice cracking with fury. "Tell them to aim higher!"

Luca actually let out a short, sharp breath that might have been a laugh if the situation hadn't been lethal. He glanced back at her, his eyes assessing her calm amidst the chaos. "Viktor! Watch the left flank! They're coming through the side alley door!"

A heavy thud shook the rear delivery entrance. The lock held for a second, then the entire wooden frame splintered inward. Two men in tactical black gear, faces obscured by ski masks and night-vision goggles, stepped through the smoke with rifles raised.

They didn't even have time to aim.

Caesar moved like a freight train. The wounded shoulder didn't slow him down an inch. He launched his hundred-and-fifty-pound frame across the room, slamming directly into the first intruder. The man went down with a sickening crunch, his rifle clattering across the tile floor. The second intruder swung his weapon toward the dog, but Luca’s gun barked twice. The man dropped instantly.

Silence fell over the clinic, broken only by the hiss of the rain, the steady drip of a broken water pipe, and the heavy panting of the dog standing victorious over the fallen attacker.

Luca lowered his weapon, his chest rising and falling beneath his ruined shirt. He stepped over the debris, walking toward the front window to scan the street.

"They're gone," Luca said into the comms piece clipped to his collar. "Clean up the mess. And get the secondary transport ready. We're moving."

Ruby stood up slowly, brushing plaster dust off her orange sweater. She looked at the shattered window, the bullet-riddled walls, and the shattered display of organic cat treats.

"Moving?" Ruby's voice shook, not with fear, but with total, unadulterated disbelief. "You brought a gang war directly to my front door, destroyed my shop, and now you want to casually move?"

Luca turned around, looking at her with a look of intense, unsettling concentration. "Ms. Hart, your clinic is no longer safe. Neither are you."

May you like

"Me?" Ruby scoffed, throwing her hands up. "I run a stray animal shelter in Baltimore! I deal with rabid raccoons and angry alley cats! I am not part of your little mafia syndicate!"

"You saved my dog," Luca said quietly, walking toward her until he stood just inches away. Up close, she could see the faint scar curving along his jawline. "In my world, that makes you a target. They saw you. They know you harbor Caesar. Which means by dawn, every assassin on the East Coast will know your name."
