Chapter 3 - The Patriarch’s LegacyThe iron gates of Villa Mirabella opened silently, swallowing my town car into the shadows of towering cypress trees that lined the edge of Lake Como. The estate was breathtaking—a majestic nineteenth-century villa built into the rocky cliffs, its marble terraces overlooking the dark, mirror-like waters of the lake below.

When the car came to a stop in the courtyard, the front door was opened not by a uniform guard, but by an old man sitting in a motorized wheelchair.

Nonno Giovanni—the legendary patriarch of the family, the man who had built a small textile business into an international real estate and shipping empire—looked frail, wrapped in a heavy cashmere blanket despite the mild summer air. But his sharp, dark eyes were wide awake, shining with an intense, unyielding intelligence that neither of his sons had ever inherited.

Gianni helped me out of the car, carrying my heavy leather briefcase—the one containing the physical hard drives of the entire audit.

"Elena," Giovanni said, his voice deep and gravelly, speaking in precise, ancient Italian. "Come inside, child. You look pale."

I stepped into the grand marble foyer. It was quiet here, stripped of the chaotic energy of Bianca’s Florentine villa.

"Nonno," I said softly, stepping closer to him. "I'm sorry to disturb you at this hour. And... I'm sorry for what I had to do tonight."

Giovanni let out a long, wheezing chuckle that ended in a short cough. He motioned with his thin, veiny hand for me to follow him into the library.

"Sorry?" the old man sneered, though there was no malice in his eyes. "For five years, I watched my foolish son and his pathetic, greedy wife treat you like a servant. I watched Bianca preen like a peacock, thinking she was the master of this family, while my boys turned into soft, lazy thieves who couldn't run a lemonade stand without cheating on their taxes."

He stopped his wheelchair beside a massive oak desk stacked with thick leather-bound journals and legal dossiers.

"I am not angry, Elena," Giovanni continued, turning his chair to face me. "I am relieved. I spent forty years building an empire, only to watch my bloodline rot from the inside out. When you brought me those tax records two weeks ago... when you showed me how Luca was siphoning funds to Malta and how Matteo was planning to strip you of your legal rights... I realized God had given me one last gift."

He looked down at my stomach, his sharp eyes softening just a fraction. "A real successor."

I touched my stomach gently. "They wanted to use this child, Nonno. Bianca whispered to me tonight—right after we announced it—that the baby would 'secure the inheritance' so they could transfer your property away."

Giovanni’s jaw tightened, his eyes flashing with a cold, terrifying fury that showed exactly how he had built his fortune.

"They will not get a single cent," Giovanni spat. "Not a marble tile. Not a thread of silk. Tonight, I signed the final codicil to my will. Everything—the holdings in Milan, the shipping logistics in Genoa, the real estate in Florence—is being placed into an irrevocable trust for my grandchild. And you, Elena, are the sole trustee."

I stared at him, stunned. "Nonno... I don't want your money. I just wanted my freedom. I wanted to escape them."

"You cannot have freedom without power, my dear," Giovanni said firmly, reaching out to grasp my hand with surprising strength. "If you walk away with nothing, they will hunt you. They will use their political connections, their lawyers, their lies to drag you through every court in Europe to take your child away from you. But if you own everything... if you hold their financial windpipes in your hand... they cannot touch you."

Suddenly, the silent air of the library was shattered by the loud, ringing chime of the villa's security intercom at the front gate.

Giovanni looked up at the wall monitor mounted near the desk.

On the screen, two vehicles were parked outside the high iron gates. Rain had begun to fall, washing over the camera lens, but the figures standing in the glare of the headlights were instantly recognizable.

It was Matteo and Bianca.

Bianca was drenched, her expensive designer hair ruined, her face twisted in a look of hysterical rage as she beat her fists against the iron intercom panel. Matteo stood beside her, looking frantic, holding a phone to his ear while pacing back and forth like a caged animal.

Giovanni leaned over his desk and pressed the intercom speaker button.

"Leave," the old man’s voice echoed through the external speakers at the gate, loud and uncompromising.

"Father!" Matteo’s voice screamed through the speaker, distorted by rain and static. "Father, open the gate! She’s crazy! Elena has stolen legal documents! She’s manipulated you! She’s trying to ruin us!"

"She didn't ruin you, Matteo," Giovanni said into the microphone, his voice deadpan. "You ruined yourself the day you mistook your wife’s decency for weakness. Go home, boy. The police have already been notified that you are trespassing."

"Father, please!" Bianca’s shrieking voice cut through the rain. "She’s a foreigner! She’s an outsider! You are giving our family heritage to a woman who isn't even one of us!"

Giovanni smiled a small, dark smile, looking back at me.

"She is more of a Ferrari than you will ever be, Bianca," Giovanni said coldly into the mic. "Now get off my land before I have the security guards release the dogs."

He cut the line, leaving the monitor silent as the two figures outside continued to scream uselessly into the storm.

Giovanni turned back to me, his expression grim. "They are desperate now, Elena. And a desperate coward is the most dangerous creature alive. You cannot stay in Italy."

"Where do I go?" I asked.

"London," Giovanni answered, opening a desk drawer and pulling out a small black leather passport case and a set of keys. "There is a private jet waiting for you at a private airfield in Lugano, just across the Swiss border. Gianni will take you. In London, Ruth Vance has already secured a safe house under a corporate name."

He pressed the keys into my palm.

"Go, Elena," he whispered. "Protect my grandchild. And when the time comes... burn their world to the ground."
