Chapter 10 - The Unbroken GlassSix months later, the spring flowers bloomed across the Whitmore estate in a riot of color—vibrant reds, deep purples, and brilliant yellows that broke through the dark soil of winter just as resilience had broken through the silence of the mansion.

Nathan Whitmore stood on the third-floor balcony, holding a cup of steaming black coffee, looking out over the sprawling lawn. Down below, Lily was running across the grass with Barnaby the golden retriever, her laughter drifting up on the morning breeze like music.

Inside the office behind him, the door stood wide open. No locked rooms. No hidden secrets. No security feeds monitoring private hallways out of paranoia. Just an open, honest home.

Footsteps approached softly from behind.

Eleanor stepped out onto the balcony, wrapping a light knitted shawl around her shoulders. She stood beside her son, leaning slightly on her cane, her gaze following Lily across the lawn.

“You know,” Eleanor murmured, smiling softly, “I was looking through the old photo albums yesterday. The ones Claire tried to hide.”

Nathan turned his head, looking down at his mother. “Did you find the anniversary picture?”

“I did,” Eleanor nodded. “It’s back on my bedside table. Right where it belongs.” She paused, looking up at him with clear, affectionate eyes. “You’ve changed, Nathan. In all the best ways. Your father would have been very proud of the man running this house.”

Nathan placed a gentle arm around his mother’s shoulders, pulling her close.

“I had a very good teacher, Mom. And a very brave little girl who showed me how to see through the glass.”

As if sensing they were being talked about, Lily looked up from the lawn below, spotted them on the balcony, and waved frantically with both hands, a huge, radiant smile lighting up her face.

Nathan smiled back, raising his coffee mug in a silent salute.

The glass had shattered months ago on the marble floor, but out of those sharp, broken pieces, they had built something unbreakable.
