Chapter 10 - THE NEW DAWNThree days later, the sun rose over Chicago, painting the glass towers of the Gold Coast in brilliant shades of gold and copper.

The penthouse suite of the Cross Estate was filled with the soft, gentle hum of a humidifier and the quiet, peaceful breathing of a newborn baby.

Claire Bennett sat in the plush armchair by the floor-to-ceiling window, holding a cup of steaming coffee in one hand while gently rocking Julian in her lap. The baby was dressed in a soft, breathable cotton onesie—no stiff silk, no scratchy tags—and his tiny fists were curled peacefully against his chest.

The front doors of the suite unlocked quietly.

Damien walked in. He was wearing a fresh black suit, no tie, his sleeves rolled up, looking tired but lighter than he had in years. The news headlines across every major Chicago network that morning were dominated by a single, seismic event: Commander Thomas Vance Arrested in Massive Internal Affairs Corruption Sweep.

Damien stopped a few feet away, watching Claire and the baby with an expression that had no shadows left in it.

"He's sleeping through the feeding schedule," Claire said softly, looking up with a faint smile. "I think he's turning into a professional slacker."

Damien walked over, leaning against the back of her chair. He reached out, gently brushing his thumb against Julian's soft dark hair. "He gets that from his uncle."

Claire chuckled softly, taking a sip of her coffee. "So. The headlines are full of your handiwork. Vance is behind bars, your shipping routes are secure, and the police department is undergoing a very thorough, very terrifying housecleaning."

"And the estate is quiet," Damien added quietly, looking down at her. "For the first time in four years... it's actually quiet."

Claire went quiet. She looked down at Julian, then slowly raised her eyes to meet Damien's gaze. The unspoken question hung in the air between them—heavy, real, and undeniable.

"What happens now, Damien?" she asked, her voice steady. "I'm technically your head of domestic security and infant care. Salaried at half a million a year."

Damien leaned down, resting his hand on the arm of her chair, his face inches from hers. The dangerous warlord of the underworld was gone; in his place was simply a man who had finally learned how to let someone in.

"That job description is entirely negotiable," Damien murmured, a slow, genuine smile touching his lips. "Provided you're willing to sign a lifetime contract."

Claire looked into his dark, steady eyes, feeling the last remaining walls around her heart finally crumble away. She smiled, shifting Julian slightly so both father and son were cradled close.

"Well," Claire whispered, her eyes sparkling with a bright, fearless warmth. "I suppose I've never been one to turn down a good negotiation."
