Chapter 4 - BREACH AT THE SEAWALLThe red emergency lights embedded in the ceiling of the penthouse flickered to life, casting a sinister, pulsing glow across the minimalist walls.

Damien’s demeanor shifted in a fraction of a second. The vulnerable, exhausted uncle vanished, replaced instantly by the apex predator who ruled Chicago’s underworld. His hand snapped to his belt, unholstering a sleek, suppressed Sig Sauer P320 with terrifying fluidity.

"Stay in the nursery," Damien ordered, his voice commanding and absolute. "Do not step out of this room. If the door opens, shoot whatever comes through it."

"Damien—"

"Lock the reinforced door," he interrupted, pressing a keypad by the entrance. A heavy steel plate slid silently across the oak panels, sealing the nursery from the main suite with a sickening clack.

Claire stood frozen in the center of the nursery, Julian safely tucked inside his crib. The baby stirred at the noise, letting out a soft whimper, but miraculously didn't start screaming. Claire scooped him up instantly, holding him tight against her chest, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped animal.

Through the thick, bulletproof glass of the penthouse windows, she could see the chaos unfolding below.

Searchlights cut through the driving rain like surgical knives, sweeping across the manicured lawns and crashing against the stone seawall. Flashes of muzzle fire flickered near the boathouse—sharp, staccato bursts of gunfire that sounded terrifyingly close.

They found us, a voice echoed in her head. They found the baby.

Claire rushed to the intercom built into the wall beside the crib. Her fingers trembled as she pressed the talk button. "Damien! Report! What's happening?"

Silence crackled over the speaker for three agonizing seconds. Then, Damien’s voice came through—breathing heavy, punctuated by the dull, rhythmic thud of distant boots and shouted commands.

"Sector four is breached. They came in from the water via submersible," Damien said, his voice unnaturally calm amidst the war zone. "Four mercenaries. High-end gear. They're moving toward the east elevator shaft."

"Are your guards—?"

"My men are handling it," Damien cut her off. "Listen to me very carefully, Claire. There is a panic room behind the mahogany bookcase in the main study. If the steel door gives way, you take Julian through that panel. The code is 04-18-21. Do you understand?"

"I understand! What about you?"

"I'm going down to greet our guests," Damien replied coldly. "Nobody touches my family."

The line went dead with a click.

Claire clutched Julian tighter, pressing his tiny head against her collarbone. She backed away from the reinforced door, her eyes darting toward the heavy mahogany bookcase in the adjoining suite visible through the glass partition.

Suddenly, a massive explosion shook the entire penthouse.

The shockwave rattled the windows, and the overhead lights flickered and died, leaving only the dim, emergency crimson glow. Downstairs, heavy boots slammed against the marble hallway floor outside the suite.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

Someone was firing directly into the heavy oak doors of the master suite. Wood splintered. Shouts echoed down the hall—rough, guttural voices barking orders in Russian.

Claire’s breath hitched. She backed into the corner of the nursery, her hand trembling as she gripped a heavy metal lamp from the bedside table.

The steel-plated door of the nursery shuddered under a massive physical blow.

They were outside.
