Chapter 4 - The Ghost in the Machine

By 3:00 AM, the sweet-smelling kitchen of the bakery had been transformed into a high-stakes command center.

Elena had brought down an old laptop she used for store inventory. Matteo, despite his physical limitations, operated the keyboard with terrifying speed and precision. With Marco resting his leg, Elena stood over Matteo’s shoulder, watching lines of code and financial spreadsheets flash across the screen.

When the USB drive decrypted, it didn't just contain numbers. It contained a roadmap of a shadow empire.

"Arthur was a genius," Matteo murmured, a grim sense of respect in his voice. "He didn't just log Luca’s thefts. He embedded a digital kill-switch into Luca’s primary shell accounts in Switzerland and the Cayman Islands. Look here."

Matteo pointed at a flashing red line of data. "This is Luca’s entire war chest. Over eighty million dollars. It’s the money he used to buy off my capos, the police chief, and the judges. Without this cash, his loyalty grid collapses like a house of cards."

"Can you freeze it?" Elena asked.

"Better," Matteo grinned, a cold, predatory smile that made him look like the feared Don he used to be. "I can drain it. I can route it through a dozen blind trusts and donate it to every charity, hospital, and orphan asylum in the state. By 6:00 AM, Luca’s men will realize their digital wallets are completely empty. And in our world, no pay means no loyalty."

"But Luca will know it's you," Elena warned, her maternal instincts flaring. "He’ll trace the access. He’ll come here."

"Let him trace it," Matteo said calmly. "I want him to know it was me. I want him to know that the man who couldn't stand just wiped out his entire existence with a single keystroke."

Suddenly, the bakery’s landline phone rang. The sharp, shrill sound cut through the quiet night like a knife.

They all froze. Elena looked at Matteo, who nodded slowly.

She walked over and picked up the receiver, putting it on speakerphone. "Vance’s Bakery," she said, trying to keep her voice steady.

"Hello, baker lady," a voice purred through the static. It was Luca. Smooth, cold, and dripping with venom. "You have something that belongs to me. Two things, actually. An old crippled dog named Matteo, and a little piece of plastic your dead husband stole from me."

Elena’s heart dropped. "I don't know what you're talking about."

"Don't lie to me, sweetheart," Luca laughed. "Did you really think I wouldn't check the delivery logs for the ballroom? Did you think I wouldn't track your license plate? Look outside."

Elena rushed to the front window of the bakery, parting the blinds.

Across the dark street, a black sedan sat idling, its headlights off. A man stood under the streetlamp, holding a heavy-caliber rifle. But that wasn't what made Elena drop the phone.

The back door of the sedan opened. A man stepped out, holding a small figure in a yellow raincoat.

Leo.

Elena looked back toward the kitchen corner in horror. The flour sacks were empty. Leo had slipped out through the back door into the alleyway, likely confused and looking for his mother or a place to play with his fire truck, and they had been too distracted by the computer to notice.

"Mommy!" Leo’s terrified scream echoed through the phone line before a hand slapped over his mouth.

Luca’s voice returned, cold and lethal. "You have exactly ten minutes to bring Matteo and the USB drive out to the street. If I see anyone else, or if the money moves from my accounts, I’ll feed the boy to the river, just like I did his father."

The line went dead.
