Chapter 6 - The Ghost of the Past

The room, already reeling from arrests and corporate scandals, fell into a stunned, breathless silence. Even the police officers stopped, sensing that a much larger, darker game was unfolding beneath the surface.

"Rostova?" I repeated, the name hitting me like a physical blow. "Viktor Rostova’s daughter? He died in prison after the embezzlement scandal."

"He didn't die," Elena said, stepping out from the shadows into the harsh light of the crystal chandelier. "He was ruined by your father's lies, forced into exile, and broken. When you inherited this empire built on stolen assets, I decided the only way to destroy the Vance dynasty was from the inside out."

She held up the silver flash drive between two fingers.

"You thought you were playing chess with Vanessa and Daniel, Julian? You thought your little wheelchair stunt was the smartest move on the board? While you were busy setting traps for goldfish like Vanessa, I was downloading the complete encryption keys to your global logistics network."

My heart hammered against my ribs. I looked at the flash drive, then at the computer terminals integrated into the security systems across the room.

"Marcus!" I barked. "Lock down the main server!"

Marcus lunged toward the master console by the pillar, his fingers flying across the touch screen. But it was too late. A sharp, high-pitched alarm chimed through the ballroom's sound system, and every digital display on the walls flickered from corporate stock charts to a stark, blood-red screen bearing the crest of the Rostova Syndicate.

"Too late, Julian," Elena smiled, a cold, bitter triumph lighting up her eyes. "By morning, every offshore account, every patent, and every controlling share you own will be transferred to a dormant foundation in Zurich. You won't just be powerless—you'll be bankrupt."

Vanessa, still kneeling on the floor in her ruined silver dress, let out a hysterical laugh, rocking back and forth. "We're all ruined... he tricked us all, and she tricked him!"

I stared at Elena. The anger that had fueled my recovery, the cold calculation I had used to trap Vanessa and Daniel—it all seemed to evaporate, leaving behind a terrifying realization: I had been so focused on the enemies inside my house that I had invited the executioner right into my bedchamber.
