Chapter 7 - The Final Gambit

"You think a flash drive wins the war, Elena?" I asked, my voice terrifyingly calm.

Elena paused, her hand hovering over her pocket as she backed toward the service exit. "The keys are already syncing to a decentralized server in international waters. By the time your security team blinks, your empire belongs to the ghosts of my family."

"Maybe," I said, taking two slow steps toward her. "But you forgot one fundamental rule about my security system."

Elena frowned, her confidence wavering for a fraction of a second. "What rule?"

"Everything in this house runs on a localized mesh network. There is no external internet connection in the ballroom tonight. Marcus pulled the fiber-optic lines six hours ago, right after Vanessa made her first toast."

Marcus straightened up from the console, tapping a green confirmation button on his wristpad. "Local quarantine complete, Mr. Vance. The data transfer she initiated didn't reach international waters. It was routed straight to an empty sandbox partition on our local server."

Elena’s face went pale. She pulled the flash drive back, staring at it in disbelief. "No... that's impossible. I verified the routing protocols myself."

"You verified the protocols I wanted you to see," I said, closing the distance between us until I was standing right in front of her. "I knew someone had been leaking board documents to the Rostova syndicate for six months. I didn't know it was the new maid. But the moment you touched that blanket with genuine sympathy instead of malice... I knew you were playing a deeper game."

Elena’s eyes darted toward the service door, but two heavy-set security operatives materialized behind her, blocking her exit just as effectively as they had blocked Daniel.

"It seems, Elena," I whispered, leaning in close so only she could hear, "your family's debt remains unpaid."

She looked up at me, defiance burning in her dark eyes. "You can lock me up, Julian. You can take the drive back. But you can't undo what’s already in motion. The board knows you staged your paralysis. The investors know your company is unstable. Even if you keep the shares, your reputation in high society is dead and buried."

"Reputation?" I smiled, standing tall and looking around the grand ballroom at the shattered glasses, the crying socialites, the arrested traitors, and the flashing red and blue lights outside. "Elena, I never cared about high society. I only wanted to know who I could trust."

I turned to the lead detective, who was watching the exchange with wide eyes. "Officer, take her into custody as well. Accessory to corporate espionage and illegal wiretapping."
