Chapter 7 - The Boardroom ShowdownThe executive boardroom on the 50th floor of Vale Global Enterprises was packed to capacity on Monday morning.

Thirty board members, legal counsel, and financial analysts sat in absolute silence beneath the massive floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the Manhattan skyline. The tension in the room was palpable enough to cut with a diamond cutter.

At the head of the polished oak table sat Grant Vale.

To his immediate right, wearing a sharp, custom-tailored charcoal suit that fit him like a second skin, sat Nolan Mercer.

Whispers rippled through the back rows of the board.

“Isn’t that the night maintenance guy?”

“What is a janitor doing sitting at the executive table during a multi-billion-dollar merger vote?”

“Grant has completely lost his mind.”

Jonathan Sterling, the senior managing director and primary stakeholder representing the Meridian acquisition group, cleared his throat loudly. He stood up, smoothing his silk tie, wearing a smug, predatory grin.

“Grant,” Sterling began, his voice echoing across the silent room. “Before we initiate the formal vote on the Meridian acquisition, I think we need to address the elephant in the room. Or rather, the janitor sitting in the executive chair.”

Grant didn't blink. He rested his hands calmly on the table. “Go ahead, Jonathan. You have the floor.”

Sterling paced toward the head of the table, casting a condescending glance at Nolan.

“Rumors have been swirling all weekend,” Sterling continued smoothly. “Police reports, whispers of a violent break-in at your penthouse, an executive assistant arrested under bizarre circumstances, and now... a total breakdown of corporate governance. Frankly, Grant, your personal life has become a liability. The board has every right to call for an emergency vote of no confidence and strip you of your CEO status.”

A murmur of agreement rippled through several board members who were secretly allied with Meridian.

Sterling smiled wider, smelling blood in the water. The hostile takeover was playing out exactly as planned. Without Grant at the helm, Vale Global would be carved up and sold for parts by noon.

“Therefore,” Sterling declared triumphantly, slamming his palm on the table, “I move that we suspend the merger vote indefinitely, remove Grant Vale as CEO, and place operational control of the company under my temporary oversight.”

Silence descended upon the room. All eyes turned toward Grant.

Grant slowly turned his head and looked at Nolan.

Nolan gave a subtle, imperceptible nod.

Nolan reached into his briefcase, pulled out a thick manila folder, and slid it across the mahogany table directly in front of Jonathan Sterling.

Sterling frowned, looking down at the folder. “What is this nonsense?”

“Open it, Jonathan,” Nolan said, his voice calm, steady, and carrying an unexpected weight of authority that silenced the entire room.

Sterling hesitatingly flipped open the folder. As his eyes scanned the first page—bank transfer receipts, offshore account numbers in the Cayman Islands, and encrypted email transcripts between Meridian Corporation and Victoria Vance—the smug color drained completely from his face.

His hands began to shake.

“This… this is forged,” Sterling stammered, his voice cracking. “This is illegal wiretapping!”

“It’s not wiretapping when the data is legally subpoenaed by federal investigators following a domestic terrorism and corporate espionage probe,” Nolan replied smoothly, leaning forward. “You and Victoria engineered the leaks to tank Vale Global’s stock. You funded the operative who broke into Mr. Vale’s penthouse on Friday night. And your signature is right there on page four approving the payoff.”

The boardroom erupted into chaos.

Board members shouted over one another, standing up, demanding answers.

Sterling looked wildly around the room, realizing he had been completely outmaneuvered. He grabbed his briefcase, turned toward the double doors, and bolted out of the room like a cornered rat.

Grant stood up slowly, adjusting his cuffs.

He looked around the stunned boardroom, his voice cutting through the noise like a razor.

“The vote on the Meridian acquisition is back on,” Grant announced coldly. “All those in favor of expanding our global footprint—without corporate saboteurs—say aye.”
