Chapter 7 - The Midnight Trial

BANG!

A gunshot shattered the night—but it didn't come from Richard’s gun.

Richard’s shoulder exploded in pain as he staggered backward, dropping his pistol.

Standing in the doorway was not a guard, nor the police. It was Eleanor Vance’s former personal bodyguard, Vance Security Chief Commander Vance—accompanied by a dozen heavily armed tactical officers.

"Drop your weapons!" the commander roared.

A chaotic firefight broke out in the corridor. Marcus grabbed Clara and threw his body over her, while the tactical team neutralized Richard’s mercenaries in seconds.

Richard, clutching his bleeding shoulder, grabbed a smoke grenade from his belt, pulled the pin, and slammed it onto the floor. Dense white smoke filled the room instantly.

Through the coughing and confusion, Richard dragged Leo’s limp, unconscious body through the secret exit behind the bookshelf—a passage only the inner family knew about.

"Marcus!" Clara screamed through the smoke. "He took Leo! He took him to the lower laboratory!"

Marcus picked Clara up in his arms—surprised at how light she felt, but even more shocked when her legs kicked out naturally. The toxin was gone. The spinal barrier was permanently broken. She was completely healed.

"Stay with the security team, Clara!" Marcus said, setting her down.

"No!" Clara stood firmly on her own two feet, tears streaming down her face. "He gave his life so I could walk. I am not letting him die!"

Together, father and daughter rushed down into the dark depths of the mansion's subterranean research facility.

CHAPTER 8 & GRAND FINALE: The Unimaginable Twist

The underground lab was cold, lit only by emergency red strobe lights.

In the center of the room, Leo was strapped to an extraction table, hooked up to a massive centrifuge machine that was already spinning, drawing black-tinted blood from his veins.

Richard stood over the console, frantically typing code, his face covered in sweat and blood.

"Stop!" Marcus shouted, stepping into the lab, gun in hand, with Clara right beside him.

Richard turned around, laughing like a madman. "You're too late, Marcus! The extraction sequence has already started! In three minutes, his blood will be completely drained, and the bio-catalyst will be purified!"

"Turn it off, Richard!" Clara sobbed, stepping forward. "He saved my life! Why are you doing this?!"

"Why?!" Richard screamed, tearing off his jacket to reveal a terrifying sight: beneath his shirt, his chest and neck were covered in decaying, blackened veins.

"Because I am dying, Clara!" Richard roared. "The crash four years ago? I was in the secondary vehicle! I was exposed to the raw, unrefined chemical pathogen! I have six months to live! I didn't do this for money... I did this to survive!"

"You monster," Marcus whispered. "You destroyed three families just to save yourself."

"And it worked!" Richard pressed a red button on the console. "The system is locked! Only my biometric heart rate can stop the machine! If my heart stops, the machine speeds up and flushes the remaining blood out!"

Richard pointed his gun at his own head, grinning maniacally.

"Shoot me, Marcus! Go ahead! Kill me! If I die, the boy dies with me! If I live, I take the cure and walk out of here!"

Marcus lowered his gun, utterly defeated. "No... please..."

Richard laughed hysterically. "Checkmate, Vance. You lose."

Suddenly, a weak, rasping voice echoed from the extraction table.

"He's... lying."

Everyone froze.

Leo was staring up at the ceiling, his face completely pale, but a dark, knowing smile formed on his lips.

"Leo?!" Clara cried out.

"Look... look at the monitor, Mr. Sterling," Leo whispered, his voice trembling with a strange, chilling calm.

Richard glanced down at the centrifuge monitor. The digital display wasn't reading Purifying Cure.

It was reading: GENETIC OVERWRITE IN PROGRESS.

"What... what is this?!" Richard stuttered, panic erupting in his voice. "What did you do?!"

"My father didn't design the catalyst to be extracted," Leo said softly, his dark eyes fixing onto Richard. "The catalyst isn't in my blood... I am the catalyst. When you pull my blood into a host, it doesn't heal you. It mirrors the exact genetic state of the person I last touched."

Richard’s eyes widened in horror as he looked at Clara.

"Before you dragged me down here," Leo smirked, blood trickling from his lips, "Clara touched my hand. Her body is 100% healthy, healed, and immune."

Richard dropped his gun, gasping as his own skin suddenly began to turn normal. His blackened veins vanished. The pain in his body completely disappeared.

"I'm... I'm cured?" Richard whispered, looking at his hands in disbelief. "I'm cured!"

"No," Leo said coldly. "You aren't cured. My father made one final failsafe. If someone forcibly takes the catalyst without the consent of the donor..."

Suddenly, the centrifuge glass violently shattered.

Richard fell to his knees, screaming in agony as his legs completely collapsed beneath him. His spine instantly locked. The paralysis—Clara's former four-year suffering—transferred into Richard’s body with ten times the force.

"MY LEGS! I CAN'T FEEL MY LEGS! WHAT DID YOU DO TO ME?!" Richard shrieked, writhing on the floor, completely paralyzed from the waist down.

"You wanted Clara's life?" Marcus said quietly, stepping forward and shutting down the machine manually, unstrapping Leo from the table. "Now you have to live it."

EPILOGUE: Three Years LaterThe sun shone brightly over the rolling hills of the Vance estate.

A grand charity event was taking place, but this time, there were no golden chandeliers, no arrogant billionaires, and no secrets.

Clara Vance walked gracefully through the garden in an elegant white dress, holding a tray of drinks, laughing with guests.

On the porch sat Leo. His health had fully recovered, though he still walked with a light cane—a small, permanent mark of the sacrifices he had made.

Marcus walked up beside Leo, placing a warm hand on the young man's shoulder.

"The medical foundation bearing your father's name just passed its 1,000th patient today," Marcus said softly. "All done through ethical science. No sacrifices."

Leo smiled, watching Clara walk toward them with two cups of tea.

"And Richard Sterling?" Leo asked softly.

"Serving a life sentence in maximum security," Marcus replied. "In a wheelchair. In a cell with no stairs."

Clara handed Leo a cup, her hand brushing against his. There was no pain, no golden glow, no terrible price to pay—just the warm, gentle connection of two people who had survived the dark together.

"Do you ever miss being the miracle boy?" Clara teased softly, sitting beside him.

Leo looked into her clear, happy eyes and shook his head.

May you like

"I never was a miracle," Leo whispered, taking her hand. "I was just a boy waiting for someone to ask me to try."
