Chapter 6 - The Ultimate SettlementBy mid-January, Daniel’s life had shrunk to the dimensions of his bachelor penthouse and the bitter taste of defeat. Stripped of his partnership, abandoned by his fiancée, and increasingly ignored by his mother—who had shocking to him, moved her primary residence to a lovely home in Austin to be near her grandchildren—Daniel decided to launch a desperate legal strike.

He hired Marcus Vance, one of Austin's most ruthless and expensive family law attorneys, known for turning messy divorces into bloody public spectacles.

Daniel sat across from Vance in a glass-walled conference room, sliding a thick folder across the table.

"I want full joint custody," Daniel declared, his voice tight with desperation. "I want visitation rights, I want my name on their birth certificates retroactively amended, and I want a court-ordered re-evaluation of her assets so I can claim my rightful share of Apex Logistics."

Vance flipped through the initial petition, his eyebrows rising higher with every page. He stopped at the marriage dissolution decree from eight years prior. He read the clauses carefully, checked the dates, and then looked up at Daniel with a look of profound pity mixed with professional disbelief.

"Mr. Reynolds," Vance said slowly, setting the papers down. "Did you actually read this document when you signed it eight years ago?"

"Of course I did," Daniel lied defensively. "I signed away my claims to her meager assets at the time because I wanted a clean break."

"You didn't just sign away assets," Vance corrected him, tapping a finger on a specific clause. "You signed a waiver explicitly stating, under penalty of perjury, that no children were conceived or expected from the marriage. Furthermore, because you abandoned the domicile and failed to contest her uncontested filing within the statutory window, you legally surrendered all parental presumptions."

"That was eight years ago! Circumstances have changed!" Daniel shouted, slamming his fist on the table. "I’m their biological father! DNA doesn't lie!"

"No, DNA doesn't lie," Vance replied coolly, leaning back in his leather chair. "But judges loathe perjury, Mr. Reynolds. If we file this petition, Kesha’s legal team will immediately bring a motion for fraudulent abandonment, perjury, and retroactive child support spanning eight years—plus interest, compounded daily, for supporting four children entirely on her own while building a multi-million-dollar enterprise."

Daniel went pale. "What... what would that total?"

May you like

Vance didn't even blink. "Conservatively? Anywhere between three to five million dollars, plus potential criminal referral for perjury on a federal family court document. And let's not forget—your former employer, Sterling Capital, is watching this case very closely. If you initiate a messy, highly public court battle over children you abandoned, your chances of ever working in high finance again drop to absolute zero."

Daniel stared at his lawyer, the walls of his entire reality finally caving in completely. Every trap he had tried to set for me had snapped shut around his own neck. He wasn't going to destroy me; I had already bulletproofed my life, my business, and my children against his pathetic reach.
