Chapter 7 - The Final VerdictTwo weeks later, Greenwood Cemetery was quiet.

The morning fog rolled gently across the manicured green lawns, wrapping around the towering marble headstones of New York’s elite.

Lorenzo DeLuca stood alone in front of the family plot.

He wore a dark charcoal suit, his expression solemn yet serene. In his arms, holding onto his neck with both hands, was Elena, wearing a tiny black coat with silver buttons.

They stood before two headstones side by side.

The first read: Isabella Conti DeLuca. Beloved mother, cherished wife. Forever in our hearts.

The second stone—the small one that had once marked an empty, three-foot coffin—had been replaced yesterday by Lorenzo himself.

It no longer held a hollow promise. It now read: Elena Conti DeLuca. Born into light. Protected by grace.

Lorenzo knelt down on the damp grass, setting his daughter gently on her feet so she could stand between the two headstones.

Elena looked down at the engraved letters on her mother's grave, tilting her head with innocent curiosity. She reached out, pressing her small, warm palm directly against the cold marble of Isabella's headstone, just the way she had pressed her hand against Lorenzo’s trouser leg two weeks ago in the grand hall.

"Say hello to your mother, little one," Lorenzo whispered, his voice thick with emotion as he knelt beside her, wrapping his arms around her small waist. "Tell her we're finally going home."

Elena smiled brightly, patting the stone twice with her tiny hand. "Hi, Mama."

At that exact moment, a warm ray of morning sunlight broke through the heavy gray clouds overhead, illuminating the cemetery in a golden halo of light and wrapping the father and daughter in an embrace that felt like an absolute blessing from the heavens above.

The war was over. The empire was secure. And the ghosts of the past could finally rest in peace.
