Chapter 8 - EXILEDThree weeks later, the swift machinery of corporate justice had completely reshaped the landscape of downtown Chicago.

The front-page headlines of every major financial newspaper blared the news:

Inside a sterile, brightly lit federal holding facility, Claire Hargrove sat alone at a small plastic table in the visitors' lounge. Her designer charcoal suit was gone, replaced by a standard-issue orange jumpsuit. Her hair, once pinned into a flawless, sophisticated knot, hung loose and unstyled around her shoulders. The wine-colored lipstick was nothing more than a memory.
The heavy door opened, and a guard escorted a visitor into the room.
Claire looked up, expecting her court-appointed defense attorney. Instead, standing across from her with a cold, unyielding expression, was Victoria Sterling.
Claire blinked in shock, slowly standing up from her chair. "V-Victoria? What are you doing here?"
Victoria didn't sit down. She remained standing, looking down at Claire with a gaze that carried the weight of absolute authority.
"I came to deliver a message personally, Claire," Victoria said, her voice icy and precise.
"I already gave the prosecutors everything!" Claire stammered, panic flashing in her eyes. "I told them about Marcus! I told them how he manipulated the metrics! I cooperated!"
"Yes, you did," Victoria acknowledged coldly. "And because of your cooperation, the judge agreed to drop your conspiracy charges down to accessory to corporate fraud. You’ll serve three years instead of ten."
Claire let out a shaky, desperate sigh of relief, slumping back against the plastic chair. "Thank God... thank God..."
"Don't thank God, Claire," Victoria interrupted sharply. "And don't thank the legal system. Because when you finish your three years, walk out of these prison gates, and try to find a job in hospitality anywhere in the United States... you won't."
Claire’s breath hitched. "What? What are you talking about?"
"Every major hotel group, every luxury resort chain, every corporate board in North America has been briefed on your conduct," Victoria said, her voice unwavering. "Your license to manage hospitality properties has been permanently revoked by the National Hotel Association. Your name is blacklisted across every civilized metropolis on this continent."
Claire stared at her in sheer horror. "You... you can't do that! That's my entire career! That's my life!"
"You chose your life the moment you looked down at an elderly woman carrying grocery bags, sneered at her poverty, and told her she didn't belong," Victoria said quietly, stepping closer to the glass partition. "You traded your humanity for elitism. Now, you get to live in the world you tried to create for others—invisible, overlooked, and unwanted."

Without another word, Victoria turned on her heel and walked out of the visitors' lounge, the heavy steel door slamming shut behind her with a definitive, echoing thud.
Claire buried her face in her orange-clad hands, the cold reality of her actions finally crushing down upon her like falling marble.
