Chapter 4 - The Ultimatum

"Full custody? Reconciliation?"
The words hung in the air like poison smoke as the courtroom erupted into chaos. Judge Harrison slammed his gavel down three times before quiet was restored.
"Silence!" the judge demanded, glaring around the room before fixing his steely gaze on Alexander. "Mr. Hartwell, this is a court of law, not a corporate merger negotiation. You cannot simply rewrite human lives and contracts on a whim. Mrs. Hartwell has petitioned for sole custody and immediate dissolution based on abandonment and financial destitution."
Alexander didn't flinch. He turned his head slightly, locking eyes with me across the aisle. There was no warmth in his gaze, only a terrifying, calcified determination.
"Your Honor," Alexander said smoothly, stepping out from behind his legal team. "My wife—my legally wedded wife—has been struggling to provide basic necessities for my daughter while my corporate accounts hold billions. That is an unacceptable state of affairs. I am formally requesting a thirty-day recess in these proceedings. During this time, I propose a temporary residence agreement: Elena and Rose will move into my primary estate on Lake Shore Drive, under my direct care, so that a court-appointed family evaluator can assess our domestic situation objectively."
"Objection!" my lawyer shouted, finally finding his spine. "That is psychological coercion disguised as a legal request! My client will not be moved into a gilded cage under her estranged husband's surveillance!"
"It is not a request, Your Honor," Alexander countered, his voice dropping an octave, ringing with unmistakable authority. "It is a reality. If Mrs. Hartwell refuses, my legal team will immediately initiate emergency guardianship petitions questioning her financial stability, compelling a protracted legal battle that will drain her resources and drag my daughter through months of media scrutiny. Or... she can accept my hospitality, live in absolute comfort, and let the court see that I am fully prepared to be a devoted father."
It was blackmail. Clean, sophisticated, devastating corporate blackmail.
Judge Harrison looked down at me, his eyes carrying a flicker of sympathy beneath professional detachment. "Mrs. Hartwell? Your counsel can fight this, but as the billionaire stated, it will be a long, grueling road. What is your response?"
Every eye in the courtroom turned toward me. The flashbulbs were blinding. I looked at Alexander—at the man who thought he could buy, bully, and maneuver his way back into my life simply because he realized he missed the prize he had discarded.
I took a slow, deep breath.
"I accept, Your Honor," I said clearly.

Alexander’s eyes narrowed slightly, surprised that I had folded so easily without a screaming match. He didn't know the golden rule of surviving a monster: Sometimes, you have to walk straight into the dragon's lair to find its weakness.
"Very well," Judge Harrison ruled, banging his gavel one final time. "Proceedings recessed for thirty days. Mandatory evaluation of the shared residence. Court adjourned."
