Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the Kingdom

"This is a conspiracy!" Patricia shrieked, her face twisting into a mask of pure, unadulterated rage. "You're a washed-up, crippled veteran! You can't do this to me! I built Whispering Pines! I protect the standards of this community! You and your freak daughter are a blight on our neighborhood!"

The room went deathly silent.

I stood up, refusing to use my cane. I walked slowly around the judge’s desk, the heavy clicking of my knee brace the only sound in the room. I stopped just inches from Patricia, looking down into her panicked, venomous eyes.

"The only blight on that neighborhood is you, Patricia," I said, my voice quiet, calm, and terrifyingly cold. "My daughter is a survivor. My wife was a survivor. And I am the man who spent twenty years hunting down predators far more dangerous than a suburban thief with a clipboard."

Agent Reyes stepped forward, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt. "Patricia Vale, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud, federal civil rights violations under the Fair Housing Act, racketeering, and bribery of a public official."

"No! Touch me and I'll sue!" Patricia screamed, flailing her arms as Reyes expert-level pinned her hands behind her back. The satisfying click of the handcuffs echoing in the room was a melody three years in the making. "Richard! Do something! Call the governor! Call the media!"

But Richard Vance was already on his knees, his hands behind his head, pleading with the second FBI agent. "I’ll cooperate! I have the records of her husband’s offshore accounts! I can give you the names of the other board members who took bribes! Just don't charge me with the federal conspiracy!"

"Take them away," Agent Reyes ordered.

As the agents led a screaming, hysterical Patricia Vale down the corridor in handcuffs, past dozens of stunned courthouse employees and reporters who had suddenly swarmed the hallway, Daniel Vance turned to me with a smile.

"The media is outside, James," Daniel said. "The story is already breaking. 'Local HOA President Arrested in Multi-Million Dollar Federal Bribery and Land Grab Scheme.' It's going to be the lead story on every major network by noon."

"Good," I said, looking out the window as the police cruisers loaded the suspects. "But we aren't done yet, Daniel. There's still one more piece of business to take care of in Whispering Pines."
