Chapter 5 - The ReconstructionThree days later, I was discharged from the postpartum recovery wing and moved directly into the Sterling Family Suite—a sprawling, fully equipped medical penthouse located on the top floor of Saint Aurelia Medical Center, overlooking the city skyline.

The suite cost more per night than Dominic’s entire annual salary, complete with a private nursery equipped with advanced NICU monitoring feeds streamed directly to a wall-mounted screen by my bed.
I stood by the window, wrapped in a plush silk robe, watching the sunrise paint the skyscrapers in shades of gold and amber.
My phone buzzed on the nightstand.
It was a notification from our family legal counsel, detailing the immediate aftermath of Dominic’s downfall. Within forty-eight hours of our confrontation, Dominic’s apartment lease—which he had gloated about keeping—had been legally revoked by the landlord, a subsidiary of Sterling Holdings. His luxury sports car had been repossessed by the bank after his joint accounts were frozen and his lines of credit vanished.
And Natalie?
She had packed her bags and fled his rented motel room by midnight the very next day, leaving behind a scathing text message calling him a broke loser before blocking his number entirely.
Dominic was completely, utterly destitute.
The door to the suite opened softly, and Arthur walked in, carrying a fresh cup of Earl Grey tea for me and a thick manila folder.
"Morning, Audrey. How are the little ones?"
"They're gaining weight," I said, a genuine smile breaking across my face. "Liam hit four pounds this morning, and Chloe is right behind him at three pounds fourteen ounces. Dr. Vance says if they keep progressing at this rate, we might be able to move them out of the incubators into open cribs by next week."
"Magnificent," Arthur beamed, setting the tea down on the marble bedside table. He tossed the manila folder onto the bed. "Now, let's talk about the future. Specifically, your future, and the children's."
I picked up the folder and flipped it open. Inside were legal drafts for a complete corporate restructuring.
"What is this?" I asked, scanning the pages.
"Dominic’s medical supply company," Arthur explained calmly. "We didn't just liquidate it. We bought out his remaining debts from the private syndicates for pennies on the dollar. The board has officially restructured it into a subsidiary of Sterling Holdings, renamed it Aurelia-Chloe Therapeutics, and placed it under a new executive board."
I looked up at him, stunned. "You're giving it to me?"
"I am putting it in a trust for your twins," Arthur corrected, leaning back in his armchair and crossing his legs. "With you as the sole managing trustee with absolute voting power. You built a medical patent portfolio under your maiden name before you married that fool—patents for neonatal micro-sensors and biocompatible incubator linings that Dominic thought were just 'cute little sketches' you did in your notebook."
My breath hitched. Years ago, before I met Dominic, I had designed a series of non-invasive sensors specifically for premature infants—sensors that didn't tear fragile skin. Dominic had dismissed them as a waste of time, urging me to focus on being a 'supportive corporate wife.'
"Those patents," Arthur continued, his eyes gleaming with pride, "are currently valued in the hundreds of millions. Combined with the restructured supply company, Aurelia-Chloe Therapeutics is poised to become the dominant neonatal tech supplier in the country. And guess who owns the exclusive distribution rights?"

A slow, triumphant smile spread across my face. "Saint Aurelia."
"Exactly," Arthur chuckled. "You aren't just a survivor, Audrey. You are about to become one of the most powerful corporate titans in the healthcare sector. And Dominic? Dominic is currently trying to find a job as a low-level medical courier just to pay off his mounting legal debts to our collection agencies."
