Chapter 5 - THE EMPIRE RECLAIMEDThe morning sun washed over the panoramic glass windows of the penthouse boardroom at Alcázar Holdings, casting long, golden geometric shadows across the polished white marble floor.

I sat at the head of the massive conference table—not wearing a borrowed vintage dress, but a sharp, bespoke navy blue pantsuit that cost more than my entire annual salary from waiting tables six months ago.

On the massive digital screen mounted against the far wall flashed the bold corporate logo of our new entity: Thorne-Alcázar Technologies.

"The merger is fully complete, madam CEO," announced Mateo, Alejandro’s chief legal counsel, sliding a thick leather-bound folio across the table toward me. "Héctor Villaseñor’s remaining corporate assets have been liquidated through bankruptcy court. All patent rights originally registered under Dr. Aris Thorne have been officially restored to your name."

I opened the folio, running my fingers over the crisp, official seals of the federal patent office. Every line of code, every foundational architecture diagram, every algorithm I had painstakingly written during my sleepless nights in our old laboratory—they were all back where they belonged.

The heavy oak doors of the boardroom swung open, and Alejandro walked in. He was carrying two porcelain cups of black coffee, setting one down neatly beside my laptop before pulling out the chair directly to my right.

"How does it feel to legally own the very company that tried to bury you?" Alejandro asked, a playful, admiring smirk playing on his lips as he took a sip of his coffee.

"It feels like waking up from a very long, very expensive nightmare," I replied, leaning back in my executive chair and looking over at him.

Over the past two weeks since Héctor’s dramatic arrest at the restaurant, our professional partnership had seamlessly evolved into something much deeper. We had spent countless late nights in this very boardroom reviewing code architecture, restructuring corporate boards, and dismantling Héctor’s network of corrupt associates. In the process, the walls I had built around my heart after my brutal divorce had systematically crumbled under the weight of Alejandro’s unwavering support and fierce loyalty.

"Speaking of nightmares," Alejandro said, his expression turning slightly more serious, "Héctor’s defense attorney filed a motion for bail this morning. Claiming mental distress and asking for house arrest at his mother’s old suburban estate."

I let out a calm, unbothered breath, spinning my high-end fountain pen between my fingers. "Let him try. Commander Silva’s financial crimes unit has already uncovered three more offshore shell companies in the British Virgin Islands. The bail hearing will be denied before he even steps foot out of the holding facility."

"Good," Alejandro murmured, reaching across the table and lightly resting his hand over mine. His touch was warm, grounding, and entirely solid. "Because I didn't bring you into my life—or my company—to look backward at losers like Héctor."

He leaned in closer, his voice dropping into that low, magnetic register that always made my pulse race.

"I brought you here because I want to build the future with you. Starting tonight. Are you free for dinner? No fake marriages. No Chinese investors. Just us."

I looked down at his hand resting over mine, then up into his dark, unwavering eyes. The broken, exhausted waitress who had carried plates in Condesa six months ago felt like a lifetime away. I was Mariana Thorne-Alcázar now—architect, CEO, and master of my own destiny.

"Only if I get to pick the restaurant," I smiled, intertwining my fingers with his.

May you like

"It's a deal," Alejandro laughed softly, leaning over to press a warm, lingering kiss to my cheek.

And as the golden morning sunlight flooded the entire boardroom, I knew for certain: the real game hadn't just begun—we had already won.
