Chapter 5 - THE SHADOWS STRIKE BACKTwo weeks passed, and the Romano estate underwent a transformation that left the old guard whispering in the corridors.

The freezing, neglected staff cottages were replaced by warm, modern living spaces. Medical checks for all employees were made mandatory and fully funded. And Clara, stepping into her new role with fierce intelligence and quiet dignity, brought a sense of humanity to the manor that it hadn't seen since before Adrien’s parents died.

Lily had become a fixture in the main house, occasionally found sitting under Adrien’s massive mahogany desk with her crayons while he reviewed multi-million-dollar shipping manifests.

Adrien found himself actually looking forward to coming home. The cold, hollow ache in his chest was slowly being replaced by something warm, foreign, and terrifyingly vulnerable.

He was sitting in his private study late one evening when his phone buzzed. It wasn't an encrypted call this time; it was a priority alert from his new head of security, a trusted veteran named Miller.

"Boss," Miller's voice came through grave and tense. "We have a situation at the outer perimeter."

Adrien’s posture stiffened instantly, every trace of domestic warmth evaporating from his expression, replaced by the lethal predator he had always been. "Speak."

"It's Marcus Vance," Miller reported. "He didn't leave town like you ordered. He went straight to the Moretti family in New York. Sold them the ledger copies and layout blueprints of the estate, claiming you're vulnerable because you've gone soft."

Adrien’s eyes narrowed into slits of ice. "Did they move?"

"A strike team is heading toward the north gate right now," Miller said. "ETA six minutes. Boss, they know about the staff quarters. They're coming in through the back."

The color drained from Adrien’s face. The back.

The staff quarters were in the back. Clara and Lily were still in the newly renovated cottage.

"Miller," Adrien growled, standing up so fast his chair crashed backward onto the floor. "Lock down the main house. Sound the silent alarm. Do not let a single soul touch the front entrance."

"And you, Boss?"

"I'm going hunting," Adrien said.

He pulled a customized Sig Sauer P226 from its holster beneath his desk, checked the magazine with a practiced click, and slipped it into the waistband of his trousers. As he turned toward the door, his eyes caught the small, mismatched teddy bear sitting innocently on the corner of his desk.

Adrien jaw tightened. He grabbed the bear, stuffed it into his coat pocket, and strode out into the darkening night.
