Chapter 9 - ECHOES OF THE PASTTwo years later, the New York syndicate was operating under an entirely new code.

The violent turf wars of the past had faded into quiet, profitable arbitration. The Bruno family no longer expanded through bloodshed and extortion; they built legitimate logistics networks, partnered with community foundations, and quietly funded pediatric therapy and animal rescue centers across the East Coast.

Most of the old guard thought Ricardo Bruno had lost his edge. They whispered in private clubs that the fearsome mafia boss had gone soft, distracted by domesticity and philanthropy.

They were dangerously wrong.

On a crisp October afternoon, Ricardo sat at his mahogany desk in the Westchester study. The door was open, and through it, he could hear the faint, melodic sound of four-year-old Sesto practicing her piano lessons in the sunroom, accompanied by the steady, rhythmic thump of Sabia’s tail against the floor.

Luca Moretti walked into the study, tossing a thick manila folder onto the mahogany desk.

"The Federal prosecutor’s office dropped the remaining racketeering investigation," Luca reported, a faint smirk playing across his lips. "And the last of the Vitali splinter factions in Brooklyn just folded their hand. They realized fighting a man who controls half the city’s legitimate commerce while holding moral high ground is a losing game."

Ricardo didn't open the folder. He didn't need to. His eyes were fixed on a framed photograph on his desk—a picture of Sesto laughing hysterically in the backyard, her small arms wrapped tightly around Sabia’s neck, with Ricardo and Allesia standing behind them in the sunlight.

"Let them keep their illusions, Luca," Ricardo said quietly, picking up his fountain pen. "A wolf that doesn't need to bare its teeth is the most dangerous animal in the forest."

"By the way," Luca added, pausing at the door with a knowing smile. "Valerio’s foundation just placed its fiftieth therapy dog with a mute child in the Bronx. The local news did a ten-minute segment on it this morning. They called you the godfather of a new kind of healing."

Ricardo looked up, a rare, genuine smile touching the corners of his mouth. "Tell Valerio we need fifty more."
