Chapter 1 - THE PREDATOR’S PHONE CALL

"If you run, you only die tired."

The silence inside the luxury SUV was heavier than the thunderstorm raging outside. Elena stared at the glowing screen of the phone resting on the console between the front seats.

Incoming Call: Isabel Vargas.

Elena’s heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. Her breath hitched, her lungs burning as she looked from the screen up to the face of the man sitting next to her. Matthew Carranza didn’t flinch. His sharp, aristocratic profile remained carved from ice. He didn’t look like a savior anymore. He looked like the devil who had just intercepted her flight from hell.

"You... you know her," Elena whispered, her voice cracking. She pressed herself harder against the leather door, her hand instinctively searching for the door handle. "You're one of them. You're with her."

Matthew didn't answer immediately. He picked up the vibrating phone with a slow, deliberate movement. He didn't slide the bar to answer. Instead, he flipped the device over, letting the screen face the floorboards, plunging the cabin back into near-total darkness, save for the fleeting flashes of lightning outside.

"If I were with her, Miss Vargas, you would already be back in that bedroom," Matthew said. His voice was a low, resonant baritone that vibrated through the small space. "And I assure you, my doors do not unlock from the inside when I choose otherwise."

Before Elena could process his words, a violent jolt shook the car.

"Sir, they are trying to box us in," the driver, a stone-faced man named Marcus, reported calmly. His eyes darted to the rearview mirror.

Behind them, the high beams of the chasing SUV cut through the torrential rain, blindingly bright. The driver of the pursuing vehicle was aggressive, tailgating them so closely that the metal bumper of their car was inches from Matthew’s custom Mercedes.

"They don't know who owns this car," Elena panicked, her tears mixing with the rainwater dripping from her hair. "They think you're just a random driver. They’ll run us off the road! You don't know what Isabel is capable of when she's desperate!"

"I know exactly what Isabel Vargas is capable of," Matthew said coldly. He leaned forward, tapping the partition. "Marcus. Take the old quarry route. Let them think they have us cornered."

"Sir?" Marcus questioned, his eyes widening slightly. "The bridge there is—"

"Do it."

The Mercedes veered sharply to the left, its tires screeching against the wet asphalt as it plunged onto an unlit, unpaved road. The ride instantly became violent. Elena was thrown across the seat, her shoulder slamming into Matthew’s chest. For a split second, she felt the rigid, unyielding muscle beneath his bespoke suit. He didn't push her away; instead, his large hand gripped her upper arm, stabilizing her with a force that was both terrifying and strangely grounding.

Behind them, the chasing SUV didn't hesitate. It followed them into the pitch-black woods, its headlights bouncing wildly over the uneven terrain.

Elena looked out the back window. "They're gaining on us!"

"Let them," Matthew murmured. He reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a silver case, extracting a single, dark cigarette but not lighting it. He simply held it, watching the headlights behind them with the detached amusement of a predator watching a rabbit run into a snare.

The road ended abruptly.

Ahead of them lay the roaring, swollen waters of the black river. The old wooden bridge that used to cross it had been partially washed away by the storm, leaving a gaping, jagged drop into the rocky rapids below.

"Marcus, now," Matthew ordered.

Marcus slammed on the brakes. The Mercedes slid sideways, mud spraying high into the air, stopping mere inches from the crumbling edge of the cliff.

Behind them, the pursuing SUV, traveling too fast on the slick mud, tried to brake. But momentum was a cruel master. The heavy vehicle skidded, its tires losing all traction on the wet clay. With a horrific screech of metal and tearing rubber, the SUV bypassed the Mercedes entirely, plunging over the edge and into the dark, churning waters below.

A sickening silence followed, save for the sound of the rain.

Elena let out a choked scream, covering her mouth. "They... they went over..."

Matthew didn't even look out the window. He finally struck a match, the small flame illuminating the sharp angles of his face and the chilling emptiness in his eyes.

"A poor tactical decision," Matthew said softly, blowing out a stream of smoke. "Now, Miss Vargas. Let us discuss why your stepmother believes she owns you—and why she owes me twenty million dollars."
