Chapter 1 - The Ghost in the Ledger

The silence of my penthouse office felt heavy, suffocating. I sat behind a desk carved from solid obsidian, the blue glow of my monitors reflecting off the cold glass. Hannah’s words echoed in my mind like a gunshot: Growing up without her father actually being there.
For thirty minutes, I stared at the blank wall. Me, Victor Vance. A man whose name alone could make syndicate bosses in Brooklyn wake up in a cold sweat. I had dismantled cartels, bought politicians, and turned Manhattan’s underworld into my personal chessboard. Yet, a twenty-four-year-old girl with gentle eyes and a folding technique had just disarmed me with a single sentence.
I reached for my encrypted satellite phone and dialed Marcus, my head of security and shadow fixer.
"Boss? Everything okay at the estate?" Marcus’s voice rasped through the speaker. "The perimeter is clean. No movement from the Russian factions."
"Forget the Russians, Marcus," I said, my voice dropping an octave, carrying the lethal chill that usually made my capos tremble. "I want a complete file on Hannah Mercer. Everything. Birth certificates, dental records, bank statements, past employment, grocery receipts. I want it on my screen in twenty minutes."
A pause on the line. "Hannah? The new nanny? Boss, we vetted her before she stepped foot in the house. Standard background check—"
"Standard checks are for tourists," I snapped. "Run a deep dive. If she has a parking ticket from five years ago, I want to know about it. Move."
I slammed the phone down. Something didn’t add up. Hannah hadn’t just stumbled into my home by accident. In my world, coincidences were dead bodies waiting to be found. No ordinary nanny walks into the fortress of New York's most feared criminal and looks him in the eye without a trace of fear. Either she was remarkably brave, or she had a death wish. Or worse—she was planted by someone who knew about the hidden cameras.

I opened the live feed of the sunroom. The house was dark now. Claire and her twin sister, Chloe, were fast asleep in their nursery. Hannah sat at the kitchen island downstairs, a cup of tea between her hands, staring directly into the lens of the hidden camera.
She wasn't sleeping. And as I watched her lips curve into a slow, knowing smile, a cold spike of adrenaline pierced my chest. She knew the camera was there all along.
