Chapter 1 - The Cold Call That Silenced the Room

The silence in the room wasn't just quiet; it was heavy, suffocation-level pressure. Carmen’s face drained of every ounce of color, her bright red dress suddenly looking like a crimson shroud. The nineteen high-society women around the dining tables sat frozen, half-filled glasses of wine suspended in mid-air.
"Zayden..." Carmen stammered, her voice cracking as she tried to force her trademark gentle-mother smile back onto her face. "Son... you’re home early! What a wonderful surprise—"
I didn't answer her. I didn't yell. I didn't throw a single piece of furniture. Instead, my hands stayed cold and deliberate as I pulled my phone from my coat pocket, unlocked the screen, and tapped three digits: 9-1-1.
"Zayden, what are you doing?!" Carmen shrieked, jumping out of her chair so fast her knees buckled. "Are you out of your mind?! Put that phone down!"
"Emergency services, what is your location?" the operator's calm voice echoed clearly through the speakerphone.
"My name is Zayden Ferris," I said, my voice eerily steady, though every nerve in my body was screaming. "I am at 742 Grandview Avenue, Apartment 8B. I need immediate medical response and police assistance. My five-year-old daughter and my wife are suffering from severe second-degree burns on their hands and arms, forced into physical labor under threat of starvation."
A collective gasp ripped through the room. Several of Carmen's guests immediately grabbed their designer handbags and began scrambling toward the front door like rats fleeing a sinking ship.
"Stay right where you are!" I barked, stepping directly into the narrow hallway to block the exit. "Every single person who sat in this room watching a five-year-old child burn her hands while eating our food is an accessory to child abuse. If anyone tries to squeeze past me, I will personally ensure the district attorney adds obstruction of justice to your charges."
The women froze, terrified.
"Sir, help is on the way," the operator assured. "Are the victims in immediate physical danger from the offender?"

That was when little Olivia took a trembling step back from the sink, water dripping from her reddened, blistered arms. She looked up at me with eyes far too old and exhausted for a child.
"Daddy..." Olivia whispered, her tiny voice cutting through the silent room like a razor blade. "Don't let Grandma hide the key again. The locked drawer in her nightstand... that's where she keeps the blue bottles and the papers that make Mommy sleep all day."
