Chapter 3 - THE MISTRESS’S ULTIMATUMPanic clawed at my chest as I drove recklessly through the city traffic, blowing through a yellow light that turned red before my back tires cleared the intersection. I didn't care about the police, the SEC, or the looming threat of federal prison. My son—my flesh and blood—was in Seattle, held by a wife who suddenly possessed the firepower to destroy me completely.

My immediate impulse wasn't reason; it was self-preservation fueled by rage. And that rage pointed directly at the woman who had helped orchestrate my downfall.

Vanessa.

Her upscale condominium in the Pearl District was twenty minutes away. I didn't call ahead; I pounded on her heavy oak door until the lock clicked and it swung open, revealing Vanessa wrapped in a silk robe, a cup of espresso in her hand.

"Richard? What on earth—" she started, her eyes widening at my disheveled appearance, the blood smeared across my knuckles, and the wild look in my eyes.

"You," I snarled, pushing past her into the apartment and slamming the door shut. "You ruined everything."

Vanessa stepped back, her expression shifting from surprise to cold irritation. "Excuse me? Lower your voice. What are you talking about?"

"Sarah knew," I shouted, pacing across her minimalist living room. "She knew about Seattle, she knew about the hotels, she knew about the dates! She’s been tracking us for months, Vanessa! Did you slip up? Did you leave a trail?"

Vanessa crossed her arms, her lips thinning into a hard line. "I didn't slip up. I was discreet. But maybe—just maybe—you weren't as slick as you thought you were, Richard. You’re the one who kept your laptop unlocked. You’re the one who talked about your business loopholes in your sleep."

"She’s a forensic accountant!" I roared, grabbing a decorative vase off the side table and hurling it against the wall, shattering it into a hundred ceramic shards. "She’s not just some housewife! She’s got all my financial records, she’s got the offshore accounts, and right now she’s sitting somewhere in this city with my son!"

Silence descended on the room, heavy and suffocating.

Vanessa stared at the broken porcelain, her face draining of color. The arrogance that usually defined her posture melted away, replaced by a sudden, dawning terror.

"Wait," Vanessa whispered, her voice trembling. "If she has your financial records... what happens to us? What happens to the money you promised me for the boutique investment?"

I let out a harsh, barking laugh, staring at her with utter contempt. "Money? Vanessa, there is no money. If Sarah releases those files to the feds, I’m going away for twenty years, and every asset I own will be seized under civil forfeiture. We are ruined."

Before Vanessa could respond, her phone—resting on the kitchen island—pinged with a notification alert.

She glanced down at the screen. Then, slowly, her face turned the color of chalk. She picked up the phone, tapped the screen, and turned it toward me with a trembling hand.

It wasn't a text message.

It was a bank notification from our joint corporate account.
