Chapter 5 - The Snake's Venom

By 3:00 PM, I was back at my Lakeside home. The house was quiet, but the air felt charged, like the atmosphere before a summer thunderstorm.
I was sitting at my kitchen island when I heard the heavy, stomping footsteps coming from the adjoining suite. The connecting door was locked, but the outdoor patio doors were not. A moment later, the glass sliding door of my kitchen was flung open with a violent crash.
Ashley stood in the doorway.
She was no longer the polished, elegant woman from the steakhouse. Her hair was pulled back in a messy, grease-stained ponytail, her expensive cream blazer was gone, replaced by a wrinkled t-shirt, and her eyes were wild with a feral, desperate rage. She was holding a thick stack of papers in her hands.
"You old witch!" she shrieked, marching into my kitchen, her voice echoing off the high ceilings. "What did you do? What did you do to Devin’s office?"
I didn't flinch. I sat quietly, holding my warm mug of tea. "I removed him from his position, Ashley. He is no longer the CEO of Quinn Enterprise."
"You ruined us!" she screamed, throwing the stack of papers onto the kitchen counter. They scattered across the granite, some falling to the floor. "He was escorted out of the building by security! Like a criminal! His assistant called me—they’ve frozen his corporate credit cards! We couldn't even pay for our groceries this afternoon! The bank declined my card at the register!"
"Your card was declined because it is tied to the corporate expense account," I said calmly. "An account that you have been illegally using for personal luxury items for over two years."
"We are your family!" she yelled, her face contorting into a mask of pure hatred. She stepped closer to me, her breath smelling of stale wine and panic. "You have millions of dollars sitting in trust accounts, and you’re living in this giant house all by yourself while we scrape by! We deserved that money! Devin deserved it! He’s been running that stupid company while you sit here doing nothing!"
"Devin was paid a very generous salary of two hundred and fifty thousand dollars a year, Ashley," I said, keeping my voice steady. "That is more than enough to live a beautiful, comfortable life in Lakeside. But it wasn't enough for you. You wanted to play the role of a billionaire’s wife. You wanted the Porsche, the Amalfi vacations, the private school, and the country club. And instead of working for it, you convinced my son to steal it from his own family."
"You don't know anything about me!" she hissed.
"I know that you are a parasite, Ashley," I said, looking her directly in her cold, dark eyes. "You found a weak, insecure man who was desperate for your approval, and you hollowed him out until there was nothing left of him but an empty shell that speaks with your voice. You thought you could treat me like an old, useless relic because I was kind to you. But tonight, you found out that the relic still owns the ground you stand on."
Ashley let out a sharp, hysterical laugh. "You think you've won? You think you can just throw us out and live happily ever after? If we leave this house, Barbara, we are taking your grandchildren with us. And I promise you, you will never see them again. I will file a restraining order. I will tell them that their grandmother is an unstable, abusive monster who threw them out onto the street."
A cold, dark anger flared deep in my chest. To use my grandchildren, my beautiful, innocent little girls, as weapons in her greedy war—that was the final boundary she should have never crossed.
I set my mug down. I stood up, towering over her, my eyes flashing with a fire she had never seen before.
"If you ever, ever use my grandchildren as a threat against me again, Ashley," I said, my voice dropping to a dangerous, vibrating whisper, "I will not just evict you. I will destroy you."
Ashley took a involuntary step back, her mouth falling open.
"I have a team of the best forensic accountants in the state analyzing every single transaction you have made over the past two years," I continued, stepping toward her. "I have video footage of you using the corporate card for personal shopping sprees. I have the forged signatures you put on the lease agreements. If I take this evidence to the district attorney, you won't just be moving out of Lakeside. You will be moving into a state penitentiary for grand larceny and tax evasion. Do you understand me?"

Ashley’s face drained of all color. She stared at me, her hands trembling, her breathing shallow and panicked.
For the first time since she had walked into my life, she had nothing to say.
