Chapter 5 - The Trap Springs

Victoria stood over Chloe, her presence cold and absolute. "Get up, Chloe. Kneeling doesn't suit a Vanguard."
Chloe scrambled to her feet, wiping her wet face with the back of her hand, her shoulders trembling. "What do you want from us? What will it take for you to stop?"
Victoria walked back to her desk and picked up a thick white folder, throwing it onto the glass table. It landed with a heavy thud.
"That is an acquisition agreement," Victoria said smoothly. "Rivera Group will absorb Vanguard Logistics. We will assume your family's forty million dollars in debt. Your father will not go to prison for fraud, and your home will not be foreclosed."
Chloe’s eyes widened with a sudden, desperate hope. "You... you'll save us?"
"I am buying you," Victoria corrected her instantly. "There is a difference. Under the terms of this contract, your father will resign immediately from all public boards. He will retain a small pension, enough to live comfortably in a modest apartment. The Vanguard name will be removed from all corporate entities, buildings, and shipping fleets."
"And me?" Chloe asked, her breath catching.
"You will sign over all your personal trust assets to Rivera Group. You will surrender your cars, your jewelry, and your properties," Victoria said, looking directly into Chloe’s eyes. "You wanted to know what it feels like to be 'people like me'? You're going to find out. You will work for my charitable foundation as a staff coordinator. Minimum wage. Forty hours a week. For five years."
Chloe gasped, stepping back as if she had been hit. "A staff coordinator? Minimum wage? I have a degree from Columbia! I was born into this society!"
"And yet, you don't even know how to speak to a human being without degrading them," Victoria replied. "Consider it an education. You have until noon to sign. If you refuse, the debt collection proceedings begin at 12:01 PM."
Chloe stared at the document, her hands shaking violently. She realized, with absolute terror, that she had no choice. It was total surrender or total financial death.
"What about Julian?" Chloe whispered, her eyes dark with hatred. "What are you going to do to him?"
Victoria’s expression softened into something far more dangerous than anger: total indifference.
"Julian made his bed twenty-two years ago. Now he has to sleep in it."
At that exact moment, across town in a cramped motel room near the docks, Julian was pacing back and forth. The room smelled of stale tobacco and damp carpet. The TV on the wall was playing the morning news on a loop, showing his face, Chloe’s face, and his mother’s face over and over.
His phone buzzed on the nightstand.
It was an unknown number. He snatched it up instantly. "Hello? Mother? Is that you?"
"Julian," a smooth, deep male voice answered. It wasn't Arthur, and it certainly wasn't Victoria.
Julian paused, frowning. "Who is this? How did you get this number?"
"My name is Marcus Sterling," the man said. "I am the senior managing partner at Sterling & Croft Law. More importantly, I am the man who represents your biological father's secret estate."
Julian’s breath caught in his throat. "My father? My father died twenty years ago! Edward Vanguard's eldest son!"
"Edward Vanguard lied to you, Julian," Marcus replied, his voice dripping with smooth, manipulative authority. "Your biological father was not Arthur Vanguard. Your biological father was Charles Sterling—my late uncle, and the man who secretly held forty percent of the original shares of Rivera Group before your mother pushed him out."

Julian leaned against the peeling wallpaper of the motel room, his mind spinning out of control. "What... what are you talking about?"
"I'm saying, Julian, that your mother isn't the victim she claims to be," Marcus said, a quiet snarl slipping into his tone. "She didn't build that empire alone. She stole it from my family, and she used you as a pawn to destroy the Vanguards. And if you want to get back everything you lost—if you want to take down Victoria Rivera—I have the documents that can put her behind bars forever."
