CHAP 4: CHLOE’S RETAIL RANSOM

The interrogation room at the Philadelphia Police Department’s Central Division was small, cold, and lit by a harsh fluorescent glare that made everyone look guilty.
Chloe Miller sat at the metal table, her hands cuffed to a steel ring in the center. She was wearing a smudged, oversized grey sweatshirt she had likely bought at a gas station, a stark contrast to the thousands of dollars in high-end silks she usually stole from Julianne’s closet. Her face was swollen from hours of crying, her makeup smeared across her cheeks like war paint from a battle she had terribly lost.
The heavy iron door clicked open, and Julianne walked in, accompanied by Meredith. Julianne carried a small, sleek leather briefcase, which she placed quietly on the metal table.
Chloe immediately sat up, her chains rattling loudly against the metal. “Julianne! Oh my god, thank heaven! You’re here! You’re finally here to get me out of this nightmare! Tell these disgusting officers who I am! Tell them there’s been a massive mistake!”
Julianne sat down across from her, crossing her legs elegantly. She didn't look angry; she looked like an executive attending a routine mid-level performance review.
“There’s no mistake, Chloe,” Meredith said, opening her tablet and placing it on the table. “You were arrested two hours ago at a high-end luxury consignment boutique in Rittenhouse Square. You were attempting to sell three Hermès Birkin bags and four Chanel classic flap bags for cash under a false name.”
“Those are my bags!” Chloe screamed, her voice cracking with a hysterical, childish pitch. “Preston bought them for me! They belong to me!”
“Actually, Chloe, those specific bags were purchased using a corporate credit line issued to Vance Logistics’ marketing department,” Julianne explained smoothly, opening her briefcase and pulling out a stack of receipts. “You see, Preston managed to get a duplicate card printed with your name on it, but the master account belongs entirely to my firm. Every single dollar spent on those bags was stolen directly from my company’s operating capital.”
Julianne slid the receipts across the cold metal table. Each one highlighted a purchase amount ranging from $12,000 to $35,000, all bearing Chloe’s sloppy signature alongside the forged authorization codes Preston had generated.
“That’s grand larceny, embezzlement, and receiving stolen property,” Meredith added cheerfully. “Given the total valuation exceeds $250,000 just for the luxury goods found in your possession today, you are looking at a mandatory minimum sentence of five to seven years in a state penitentiary, Chloe. No bail, no probation.”
Chloe shook her head violently, her eyes darting between the receipts and Julianne’s calm, unblinking face. The reality of a prison cell—the gray walls, the jumpsuits, the complete loss of her pampered, privileged lifestyle—was staring her directly in the eyes.
“No… no, no, no!” Chloe sobbed, slamming her cuffed hands onto the table. “I didn't know it was stolen! Preston told me he was making millions on his tech investments! He told me you were just a boring accountant who didn't understand high fashion! He said you wouldn't even notice the charges because you were too busy working!”
“And you believed him because it suited you,” Julianne said, her voice dropping into a cold, hard register that made Chloe freeze. “You loved the clothes, Chloe. You loved walking into my house, taking whatever you wanted from my closet, eating my food, and then looking at me like I was a servant who had cleared your table. You called me 'new money' at my own dining table, remember?”
Chloe’s chest heaved as she wept, her arrogance completely disintegrated. “I’m sorry, Julianne! I’m so, so sorry! I’ll give everything back! I’ll give you all the bags, the clothes, the jewelry—everything! Just please drop the corporate charges! Don't let them send me to jail! I wouldn't survive a single day in there!”
Julianne leaned forward, her face just inches from the trembling woman.
“You can’t give them back, Chloe. The federal government has already seized your entire collection as part of Preston’s criminal forfeiture case. You have absolutely nothing left to bargain with.”
“Then why are you here?!” Chloe shrieked in sheer desperation. “Why are you doing this to me?!”
“I’m here to give you one single choice,” Julianne said, sliding a legal document and a pen toward her. “This is a full, sworn affidavit detailing every single instance where Preston gave you corporate cards, every conversation where he admitted to using Vance Logistics funds to pay off your personal debts, and every document he forced you to sign to hide his shell companies. You sign this, you testify fully against your brother in federal court, and my legal team will request the district attorney to reduce your charges to a probated sentence.”
Chloe stared at the document. Her trembling hand reached out, her fingers hovering over the pen. “Testify against Preston? But… he’s my brother. He took care of us.”

“He used you as human shields for his financial crimes, Chloe,” Julianne said, standing up and closing her briefcase with a sharp, final click. “You have exactly thirty seconds to decide whether you want to protect a brother who ruined your life, or spend the next seven years of your youth inside a federal prison cell wearing a uniform that definitely isn't Chanel.”
Chloe didn't hesitate for another second. With a panicked sob, she grabbed the pen and began signing her name as fast as her cuffed hands would allow, completely sealing her brother’s fate.
