Chapter 4 - THE MIDNIGHT AMBUSH: When the Shadows Turn Against You

Three days passed in a tense, quiet truce.
Leo’s health improved rapidly. He was back to his energetic self, coloring in his books and playing with toy dinosaurs in the estate's high-security playroom. To Damian's surprise, Leo took an immediate liking to Elena. She had a gentle, patient way with him, reading him stories and speaking to him in soft Russian phrases that seemed to soothe him.
Damian watched them from the doorway, a strange, unfamiliar warmth blooming in his chest. For three years, he had been a single father, carrying the weight of a violent empire on his shoulders. Seeing Elena with Leo made the house feel less like a fortress and more like... a home.
But the illusion of peace was shattered on the fourth night.
It was 2:00 AM. Damian was in his study, reviewing financial records of Sofia's old family connections, when the power suddenly cut out.
The entire estate plunged into pitch blackness.
A split second later, the emergency red backup lights flickered on, casting a bloody glow across the hallways. The high-pitched whine of the estate's silent alarm began to pulse in Damian's earpiece.
"Boss!" Elias’s voice cracked through the radio. "We have a breach! Perimeter fence has been cut. High-frequency jammers are blocking our comms. They’re inside the grounds!"
"Where is Leo?!" Damian roared, grabbing his assault rifle from the gun safe behind his desk.
"Medical wing! I'm sending three men—"
A loud explosion rocked the mansion, shaking the floor beneath Damian's feet. The sound came from the west wing—where Leo and Elena were sleeping.
"Leo!" Damian screamed.
He sprinted down the long corridors, his boots pounding against the hardwood. The smell of smoke and cordite began to fill the air. He rounded the corner to the west wing just in time to see two masked men dressed in black tactical gear aiming their rifles at the medical wing door.
Damian raised his weapon and fired. Two precise bursts of automatic fire cut the men down before they could pull their triggers.
He kicked open the door to Leo's room.
The room was in ruins. The window was shattered, and a smoke grenade was hissing on the floor, filling the room with thick, white fog. Through the haze, Damian saw Elena.
She had Leo wrapped in a heavy blanket, shielding his body with her own. She was crouching in the corner behind a heavy oak dresser, holding a fallen guard's pistol with both hands. Her face was pale with terror, but her eyes were fierce.
"Damian!" she cried out.
"I’ve got you," Damian said, rushing over to them. He scooped Leo into his left arm, keeping his rifle raised in his right. Leo was crying, clinging to Damian’s neck. "We have to go. The house is compromised."
"How did they get past the outer security?" Elena gasped, following close behind him as they navigated the smoky hallway.
"An inside job," Damian growled, his mind racing. "Someone gave them the security codes. Someone disabled the secondary generators."
They reached the private elevator that led to the underground escape tunnel. Damian punched in the code, but the keypad flashed red. System Locked.
"Damn it!" Damian slammed his fist against the wall.
"Looking for this, Boss?"
A voice echoed from the shadows of the corridor.
Damian spun around, raising his rifle.
Standing at the end of the hallway, illuminated by the flashing red emergency lights, was Elias. He was holding a remote detonator in one hand and a silenced pistol in the other. Behind him stood four masked Bratva mercenaries.
Damian felt a cold knife twist in his chest. "Elias. You?"
"I'm sorry, Damian," Elias said, his voice void of emotion. "But the Costa name is dying. You wanted to go legal. You wanted to make us soft. The Bratva offered me fifty million dollars and a seat at the high table to deliver the boy. Sofia sent her regards."
"Sofia is here?" Elena whispered, horror in her voice.
"She's waiting at the extraction point," Elias smiled. "She wants her son. Or rather, she wants his DNA. Give me the boy, Damian, and maybe I’ll let you and the girl live long enough to leave the country."
Damian looked at his old friend, the man who had stood by his side through a dozen turf wars. The betrayal was bitter, but it also brought a cold, lethal clarity.

"You know me, Elias," Damian said softly. "You know I don't make deals with traitors."
"I knew you'd say that," Elias said, raising his gun. "Kill them."
