Chapter 5 - The Vance DynastyThe revelation about Julian Vance reframed the entire chess board.

Arthur Vance, Grant’s former senior partner, had spent years positioning himself as the loyal protector of the firm, while his younger brother Julian controlled the financial levers of Ashford Hills Country Club and several key commercial real estate holdings tied to the Whitmore Trust. If Julian and Sloane had partnered up to engineer Grant’s corporate sabotage, it meant the betrayal went far deeper than a cheating husband and an ambitious mistress.

It was an organized conspiracy designed to systematically dismantle my family’s legacy from the inside out.

At 7:00 PM, I drove myself to an unmarked industrial park on the industrial east side of the city. Marcus Bell was waiting for me beside a black SUV parked under the flickering sodium lights of a shuttered warehouse.

“Are you sure about this, Mrs. Whitmore?” Marcus asked as I stepped out of my car, pulling my trench coat tighter against the chilly autumn wind. “Julian Vance is heavily connected. If we move too fast without federal backing, they’ll bury these corporate filings before the authorities can seize them.”

“They’ve already started shredding documents, Marcus,” I said, looking toward the lit second-floor window of the brick building across the alley. “That’s Julian’s private storage archive. His brother Arthur told him the audit had reached the firm today. They’re panic-cleaning.”

“What’s the play?”

“We don’t call the police yet,” I replied, walking toward the side entrance with absolute calm. “We let them think they’re covering their tracks while we back up every digital ledger they’re currently trying to delete.”

Using the security bypass code Marcus had acquired through a compromised maintenance contractor, we slipped through the side fire door into the stairwell. The building smelled of old paper, ozone, and industrial cleaning fluid.

We reached the second-floor landing just as the heavy oak door to the archive room swung open.

Julian Vance stepped out, clutching a cardboard box overflowing with red-folder financial files. He froze instantly when he saw me standing under the flickering fluorescent light, flanked by a towering, grim-faced security professional.

“Caroline?” Julian stammered, dropping the box. The folders spilled across the linoleum floor, scattering international wire receipts and Cayman Island shell-company certificates everywhere. “What the hell are you doing here?”

“Retrieving my property, Julian,” I said, stepping past him into the archive room.

Julian spun around, his face turning red with sudden fury. “You have no jurisdiction here! This is private commercial property! I’ll have you arrested for trespassing—'

“Trespassing?” I turned around, holding up a flash drive I had just plugged into his main terminal. The monitor flickered, displaying the master ledger of every fraudulent transaction funneled through Meridian Apex LLC, directly linked to Julian’s personal Swiss bank account. “Julian, your brother Arthur is currently cooperating with federal investigators to save his own license. If you drop your voice one more decibel, I won't just hand these files to the SEC—I’ll send them to your wife.”

Julian’s bravado evaporated in a single second. He slumped against the filing cabinet, his hands trembling as he stared at the glowing monitor.

“Sloane… Sloane promised it was foolproof,” Julian whispered, his voice cracking. “She said once Grant divorced you and secured the trust allocation, we would divide the liquidation proceeds three ways.”

“Well,” I said softly, walking over to pick up one of the scattered folders from the floor. “It seems your math was slightly off.”
