Chapter 5 - THE DEVIL’S MANSIONThe Valenti estate was an iron fortress perched high on the cliffs of Blackwood Ridge, overlooking the misty dark waters of Grayhaven Bay.

Surrounded by twelve-foot wrought-iron gates, security towers, and patrolling guards with attack dogs, the estate was a masterclass in modern luxury and impenetrable security.

The heavy black limousine glided through the main gates and pulled up to the front entrance of a sweeping stone mansion.

Nico stepped out first, extending his hand to guide Brielle down.

The massive double oak doors of the mansion swung open. Standing in two neat lines in the grand foyer were twenty household staff members—housekeepers, chefs, buttlers, and drivers.

As Brielle stepped across the threshold, every single staff member bowed deeply at a ninety-degree angle.

"Welcome home, Donnessa Valenti," the head housekeeper—an elderly Italian woman named Maria—said warmly, her eyes filled with genuine respect.

Brielle froze, feeling overwhelmed. "Oh! Please... you don't have to bow to me! I was a banquet server three hours ago—"

"Brielle," Nico gently interrupted, putting his large hand on the small of her back. "They bow because they respect the ring you wear. But more importantly, they bow because they know you are one of them."

Maria looked up, a warm smile touching her face. "Don Nico speaks the truth, child. We heard what you did to Miranda Kensington and Daniel Mercer. For twenty years, wealthy monsters have treated us like dirt in this city. Tonight, one of our own sits on the throne."

Tears pricked the corners of Brielle’s eyes. She nodded gently to the staff. "Thank you. Please... call me Brielle."

"Yes, Donnessa Brielle," Maria bowed again happily.

Nico guided Brielle up the sweeping marble staircase to the master wing on the top floor.

He opened the double doors to his private bedroom suite—a vast space featuring a grand king-sized bed wrapped in dark silk sheets, a roaring stone fireplace, and a massive walk-in bathroom with a marble jacuzzi tub.

"You need rest," Nico said softly, stepping into the room and gently untying the emerald silk dress from around her waist.

Brielle gasped lightly as the emerald fabric fell away, leaving her in her lace underwear. She instinctively reached up to cover her soft belly and full thighs, her old insecurities screaming in her head.

"Don't," Nico growled softly, catching her wrists in his hands.

He gently pulled her hands away from her body. His dark eyes scanned every curve, every soft line, every stretch mark on her golden skin with an intensity that felt like fire.

"You are perfection, Brielle," Nico whispered, leaning down to press a hot, lingering kiss against her shoulder blade. "Every inch of you was made for my hands."

He swept her up in his arms, carrying her over to the warm, bubbly waters of the jacuzzi tub that Maria had already prepared.

He set her gently into the steaming water, stepping in beside her in his trousers, uncaring that the silk was soaked through. He grabbed a sea sponge and scented soap, delicately washing the dried blood and grime from her injured hand, his touch as gentle as a feather.

"Tomorrow, the city will react," Nico murmured, sitting behind her in the tub, pulling her back against his broad chest. "The Kensingtons will try to strike back. The Commission will send envoys. They think you are a weak point in my armor."

Brielle leaned back against his hard chest, her fingers resting over the heavy black diamond signet ring on her right hand.

"Let them try, Nico," Brielle whispered, her dark eyes flashing with a new, fierce light. "They think I'm just a banquet girl. They don't know I learned how to survive in the dark."

Nico let out a dark, proud laugh, pressing his lips deeply against the crown of her head.

"That's my girl," he purred. "That's my Donnessa."
