Chapter 3 - The Audit of the Bloodline — "The Three Shell Companies My Sister Signed for in Her Dorm Room!"

To understand how my family came to despise me, you have to understand the economy of affection in the Belmont household.
My father didn't see children; he saw corporate extensions of his own ego. Vanessa was his blue-chip stock—highly visible, easily polished, and perfectly suited for the country club newsletters. I was the toxic asset he couldn't liquidate. When I was twelve, I overheard him telling his business partner that sending me to a private school was like "putting premium fuel in a broken-down tractor."
So, I let them think the tractor was dead. I stayed in the shadows. I wore the faded clothes. I sat through twenty-four family dinners a year where my sister’s straight-A report cards were toasted with vintage Bordeaux, while my perfect scores in advanced mathematical logic were dismissed as "autistic hyper-fixation."
But while they were looking down at me, they forgot to hide the keys.
Three weeks before Grandma Eleanor passed away, she called me to her bedside at the Bellevue Convalescent Center. Her mind was perfectly sharp, even if her body was failing.
"Claire," she had whispered, her fingers cold and trembling as she pressed a small, brass safety deposit key into my palm. "Your father thinks I am a foolish old woman who doesn't see the world through a screen. But I know what he’s doing with Vanessa. They think because you are quiet, you are blind. Show them how well you can see."
After her funeral, I went to the private vault at the Pacific Northwest Bank. Inside wasn't jewelry or cash. It was a single encrypted external drive and the original, unmodified copy of the Eleanor Belmont 1998 Sovereign Trust Book.

Every single one of those transfers required a certified medical release form stating that Grandma Eleanor was completely incapacitated and unable to manage her own estate.
The problem? The medical certificate attached to the Delaware transfer was dated November 14, 2023. I had the security logs from the convalescent home proving that on that exact afternoon, Grandma Eleanor was sitting in the garden, drinking tea with three different members of the local historical society.
The signature wasn't Grandma's. It was a digital composite, created on an iPad that had been purchased using a credit card registered directly to Vanessa’s Harvard dorm address.
"Elias," I said, leaning against my table as the board members at the front tables began opening the audit folders. The sound of rustling paper was like a gathering storm. "Please read the official response from the Federal Trustee regarding the ownership of the Carmel mansion."

Elias Mercer stepped forward, opening a leather portfolio.
"As of 4:15 PM today," Elias announced, his voice slicing through the whispers, "the property located at 1420 Scenic Road, Carmel-by-the-Sea—the thirteen-million-dollar estate Mr. Belmont just claimed to have purchased in his daughter's name—has been seized under an emergency federal forfeiture warrant. The funds used for the escrow down payment were traced directly to an illegal liquidation of the Eleanor Belmont Trust’s restricted medical reserve."
