Chapter 5 - The Sanctuary of Sinners

The rain was pouring in sheets by the time they reached the Saint Jude Cathedral, an abandoned, Gothic structure on the edge of the city’s poorest district. The stained-glass windows were shattered, and the towering stone arches looked like the ribcage of a long-dead beast.

Mara was pale, the poison from the gas already beginning to slow her heart rate. She leaned heavily on Lucian, while Bishop limped beside them, his eyes alert but his strength fading.

They stepped through the rotting wooden doors. Standing near the altar, illuminated by the pale moonlight streaming through the ruined roof, was a single figure.

It was Julian Vance.

But he was no longer shaking, and he was no longer acting like a bumbling, drunk heir. He stood straight, surrounded by a dozen heavily armed mercenaries, holding a silver briefcase containing two glowing blue vials of the antidote.

“You,” Lucian hissed, his hand resting on his gun, though his body was trembling from the poison. “You set this up.”

“Oh, Lucian. You always thought you were the smartest man in the room,” Julian sneered, a sadistic smile playing on his lips. “You thought I was just a spoiled brat you could humiliate. But my family didn't build their fortune on shipping. We built it on cleaning up after people like her.” He pointed a finger at Mara.

“The Vanguard works for the Vance family,” Mara realized, her voice weak. “The orphanage... you didn't burn it to kill me. You burned it to hide the files.”

“Exactly,” Julian laughed. “And now, I get to kill two birds with one stone. I eliminate the legendary Wraith who knows too much about my family's black ops budget, and I take over the Draven empire. The city will think Lucian Draven died in a tragic gang war.”

Julian snapped his fingers. Two mercenaries stepped forward, raising their weapons.

“Any last words, sweetheart?” Julian mocked, looking at Mara.

Mara let out a low, raspy chuckle. It grew louder, echoing through the empty cathedral until it sounded like the laugh of a madwoman.

“What’s so funny?” Julian snapped, his smile faltering.

“You think you brought me here to die,” Mara said, straightening her back, her posture suddenly losing all signs of weakness. She looked at Bishop, who stood perfectly still, his eyes locked onto Julian. “But I didn’t come here to buy your antidote, Julian. I came here because I needed all of your active cell leaders in one room.”

Hook: Mara reached into her pocket and pulled out a small, black detonator. “Did you really think I didn’t know the Vance family owned Vanguard? Who do you think designed your family's secure bunker system ten years ago?”
