Chapter 5 - THE NOOSE TIGHTENS AT THE PORT OF OAKLAND

"She doesn't know the key, Gabriel!" David shouted, his gun raised, shielding Bridget and Lila with his body. "The ledger is locked. Even if she reads it, she can't activate the system without my physical biometric bypass!"

"I don't need your biometrics anymore, David," Gabriel smiled, a cold, empty expression. "I cloned your retinal scan two years ago from the coroner’s office before we staged your crash. I only need the child's brain to process the visual algorithm. She is the missing processor."

Suddenly, a massive explosion rocked the upper levels of the estate.

The concrete ceiling cracked, showering them in dust and debris. The distraction was all David needed. He fired three rapid shots at the headlights of Gabriel’s SUV, plunging the garage back into chaotic darkness.

"Run!" David roared, grabbing Bridget's hand.

They scrambled into a waiting armored delivery van that David had parked near the service entrance. He slammed the keys into the ignition, the heavy diesel engine roaring to life. He smashed through the security gates of the estate, spiraling out onto the fog-shrouded streets of San Francisco.

Behind them, the headlights of Gabriel’s SUVs pursued them like hunting wolves.

"They're tracking the van!" Bridget yelled over the roar of the engine as bullets shattered the rear window.

"We aren't going to the redwoods," David said, his knuckles white on the steering wheel. "They'll cut us off on the Golden Gate Bridge. We're going to the Port of Oakland. I have a container ship waiting. We get on that boat, and we disappear to Asia."

"To Asia?" Bridget stared at him in horror. "We don't have passports! We don't have a life there!"

"We don't have a life here anymore, Bridget!" David yelled back, swerving the van to avoid a spike strip deployed by one of Gabriel's forward units. "It's either a container ship to Tokyo, or a shallow grave in the bay!"

The chase was a blur of screeching tires, shattering glass, and the thick, suffocating San Francisco fog. They crossed the Bay Bridge, plunging into the industrial labyrinth of the Port of Oakland. Towering shipping cranes loomed out of the mist like prehistoric beasts.

David slammed the van to a halt near Pier 42. A massive, rusted cargo ship sat low in the dark water, its engines humming a deep, bass vibration that shook the wooden dock.

"Go! Up the gangway!" David ordered, shoving a heavy duffel bag into Bridget’s arms.

But as they reached the foot of the wooden dock, the headlights of five vehicles boxed them in, cutting off all escape to the ship.

Gabriel Voss stepped out of the lead vehicle, flanked by ten heavily armed mercenaries. Beside him stood a man Bridget hadn't expected to see—the head server from the gala, now dressed in a crisp, expensive Italian suit.

"You really should have checked the staff registry more closely, David," Gabriel said, gesturing to the server. "The Kurogawa Clan didn't try to poison me tonight. They are my business partners. The entire gala was a joint venture to flush you out of hiding."

David lowered his gun, his shoulders slumping in defeat. He looked at Bridget, then down at Lila.

"I'm sorry," David whispered. "I thought I could outsmart them."

"There is no outsmarting the system, David," Gabriel said, stepping forward, his hand extended. "Give me the girl, and I will let Bridget walk away. You have my word."

Bridget looked at her husband. Then she looked at the dark, freezing water of the bay.

Then, she felt a tiny, sharp tug on her sleeve.

Lila was looking up at her. She wasn't crying. Her young face was incredibly calm—the same calm she had possessed when she shattered the sake glass. She began to tap a rapid, silent rhythm onto Bridget’s palm.

It was a Morse code pattern David had taught her.

T-R-U-S-T-M-E

Lila looked past Gabriel, her eyes locking onto the massive shipping crane towering directly above them. On the crane's platform, three hundred feet in the air, a tiny, red laser sight was painting Gabriel’s chest.

But the sniper wasn't one of Gabriel’s men.

Lila looked back at her mother, her lips silently forming three words.

Daddy's other friends.
